Questions about original Romulan Armada 1 and 2 ships

Talk about anything related to old versions of Armada.

I was recently told about FO and after about 10 years since having played Arm 1 and 2, I'm now trying to get it to work on my new system (W8).

I do have a few questions though. Some may belong in other areas, but I don't want to upset the moderators by spamming.

1) Where does it list the technical requirements?

2) Is there a way to see each ship without playing the game (the Gallery seems to just have a random assortment of pics)?

3) The Shrike (and Vulture especially), look different. Are there screenshots of these and other original ships?

4) Are any of these ships available in physical form, so I can display them (if so, where might I find them)?

Thanks in advance!

For system requirements, the Guide has Pentium 4 2.8 Ghz (~Athlon XP 3200) processor, 1.0 GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce 7200 (~ ATI Radeon 9100) as the minimum, but I've run it with a 1.8Ghz Intel processor, 2.0GB DDR RAM, and an Nvidia GeForce 5700LE with no problems. If your computer was built within the last ten years, it will run FO just fine.

The Storm3D utility can be used to view ship models, but it doesn't work quite right with FO since it was designed for stock A2.

The Vulture is not included, and the Shrike, while in FO, is not featured in the gallery; that would be the Rhien.

There are no physical models.

EDIT: Found the Shrike. There's one near the center, one in the bottom right, and a Rhien on the far right.

Hi and welcome to the forums :)

You can find each and every ship in the Ship Database, although stations are not shown there.

We're quite lenient with posting here, so ask away - many basic answers can be found on the guide as well

mixed tech exclusive ships (like the edjen) are not in the database either. you can find their descriptions (but not stats) in the mixed tech analysis sections:
eg for the klinks: http://guide.fleetops.net/guide/strateg ... mixed-tech

Thank you all for the warm welcome!

I had a look at the database, which was very cool. What I'm looking for is a 5 view gallery of the ships (if one exists) or something to check out the ships outside of the game.

I caught a glimpse of the Shrike and what I think is the Vulture here: //www.fleetops.net/news/item/228-romulan_names. Then I came across an article about the Raptor. Do they exist in FO? With 200 ships, it would be handy to have such a feature.

They seem to be called different names now too, which makes them harder to find.

raptor isn't in game yet. it's in a future patch

to see all units that are buildable (and a small number that aren't):

- start a skirmish game
- make sure you're playing as borg
- probably best if the enemy is normal
- use a long cease fire if you only want to see the ships
- choose a big map and put the enemy really far away or give yourself an ally if you want to keep things going long enough to see all the ships
- use free tech if you want to test specials without having to research
- when in game, hold control and push e to enter edit mode. the game will be paused while in edit mode
- you'll see at the top left corner that you can push the function keys to navigate a tree which allows you to instantly create any unit or map object
- push tab to go back up a level
- whenever you select a list of ships for the first time there will be a small hang as the game loads
- you'll also see "team 1", unless you set yourself on another team, then you'll see that number. hold shift and push up or down arrows to change the team number. inserted units will be on that team. team 0 belongs to the map, aka ferengi
- when you select borg ships you wont actually get a ship, just the half finished uplink as it wants you to select modules. this costs money, so use the showmethemoney cheat to get it. type that in the chat menu (push enter) just like in stock a2 (this is why you choose borg race, so you can finish building their ships)
- double click units to see and edit their current properties, such as health, special energy, team number, subsystem disabled, etc
- drag units to move them
- control+e at any time to return to game
- units will return to where they were before edit mode if you moved them while editing, unless you disable engines

That's a Griffin. They're all green like the A1 version instead of green and brown like the A2 version.

Sorry, I meant Griffin. So the Shrike and Griffin are available now? I have Windows 8. Is there an idiots guide to setting this up? I was told I need the A2 game to make this work.

You do need A2. To install FO, just place the A2 disk in the drive then run the Fleet Ops installer. I recommend installing it to C:/Games instead of C:/Program Files or C:/Program Files (x86) due to the way User Account Control works. After that just run the multimedia installer and that's it.

shrike and griffin are in game now. griffin is only available for the right avatar helev (you pick avatar when you start the match.

to expand on what cabal said, you don't need stock a2 installed to install fleetops. you just need to have the disk.

Yah, that's one of the problems because I can't find my old arm discs. So, I need that to make FO work? :(

Is in game the only way to get a good all sides views of the ships? Are the mod files not located somewhere in the download directory? I wouldn't mind trying that viewer anyway, just to see if it works.

Does this work on Windows 8?

afaik there aren't any pictures in the data files. there are the buildbutton images, but they aren't user friendly, and they only show one angle in low res.

some people have had issues with windows 8 and fleetops. i don't use win8 so i don't know much about the topic. my advice to anyone with win8 would be to go back to win7. but there should be a thread or two on this forum where people have asked for help about win8 and fleetops. try search for them.

Okay, I got your PM's (along with a PM from another helpful member). Many thanks for that. I'll look around and see what I can find with regards to Windows 8 compatibility.

This might be the wrong place to ask, but do you know when the next patch with the Raptor is coming out?

I'm a little bit confused because after reading this article I got the feeling it was finished and the articles date is November 2012.

nope. the fleetops dev team are rarely drawn on release dates.

that article is just announcing the raptor's return to the next patch.

The next release is taking a while, too, since it's a complete overhaul instead of a patch. It will be v4.0 instead of v3.2.8 or v3.3.0.
