I was digging through my older games a few days ago and found Empire Earth II. I played it for a bit, and remembered something that would be nice for FO. In EE2, there were standard campaigns, but there were also historical turning point scenarios. These were historical battles which could be played from either side, with the goal being either to fulfill history by leading the historical winner to victory or to change history by leading the historical loser to victory.

My idea for a campaign mode in FO is to have a series of turning point scenarios. Each scenario would have a "canon" winner, and a player would first have to play a scenario with the "canon" winner and win. After doing this, one could either try the next scenario as the "canon" winner or try to play the same scenario as the "canon" loser and win, which might unlock a new scenario along an alternate timeline. Ultimately, the storyline would look like a tree, with the official Fleetops storyline being just one branch of many. Of course, some scenarios may have more than one "canon" winner and/or loser, leading to even more possibilities.

This will require a lot of work to complete, so the best approach would be to have the development team construct the "canon" timeline while community members construct the alternate timelines with some guidance from the development team. Those alternate timeline scenarios which are good enough could be included in future patches of the game.

Remimds me of the campaign in Kessen for the PS2. There were two seperate campaigns, one for the East and one for the West, that were made up of various scenarios. The cool thing was that if you lost a scenario, rather than a "Game Over" the story would proceed along a different path and use a different scenario to the winning one.
For example, to put it Star Trek style, let's say you're playing as the Feds and are attacking the Dominion controlled Bajor system. If you win the battle, the story proceeds witb you reclaiming DS9 and getting one step closer to winning the war. If you lose however, the fleet is destroyed and the Admiral's ship just barely escapes. Pursued by Dominion forces, you have to navigate a system of dense asteroid fields and hostile nebulae in an attempt to return to Federation space and warn them of the attack. From there, another branch appwars; does your ship safely esxape and reach Cestus to gather reinforcements? Or do the Dominion destroy your ship and attack the Cestus system, catching the defense force by surprise?

Great ideas. It'd be great to see them fleshed out and even have series of missions planned and whatnot.

I had asked for a subforum on this. There's a vast cosmos of story/mission ideas that can be used and should have their own section. In here, they'd most likely overrun the subforum.

My idea here would be:
Scenario 1: Battle of Bajor. Play as the Federation first. If you win, then you can play Scenario 2 as the Federation, which gets you one step closer to winning the war, or you can replay Scenario 1 as the Dominion. If you win Scenario 1 as the Dominion, then you can play Scenario 2-A: Hunt for the Admiral as the Dominion. If you win, then you can play Scenario 3-A: Assault on Cestus as the Dominion, or you can replay Scenario 2-A as the Federation. If you win Scenario 2-A as the Federation, then you can play Scenario 3-B: Warn Cestus as the Federation. Winning Scenario 3-B as the Federation allows you to gather reinforcements for Scenario 4-B: Second Battle of Bajor. Winning Scenario 3-B as the Dominion would have the same effect as winning Scenario 2-A as the Dominion, so this would not unlock anything, but would just branch over to Scenario 3-A.

Note that this can easily get out of hand. Make a storyline with enough chapters and enough choose-your-adventure choices and it can get to the point of Parallels.

I like your idea RedSnappa. I agree that it could very easily end up far too complicated.

Although I'm not particularly tech-savvy, I do have an idea that could potentially make it work (although I've no idea how possible it is). You could create a load of generic scenarios, such as chasing the Admiral's ship or invading/defending system X. Then create several specific scenarios, such as the Battle of Bajor or the Battle of the Chintoka system. Although I don't know how one would do it, you could then set up a system where the computer determines based on your victory or defeat what scenario it should play. This way, there would be no need to tailor each specific scenario, provided one could also find a way to make the computer create random maps for the scenarios each time.

Again, I don't know how possible that is, but I reckon in theory it could work.
