Research Normal Weapons

Would it be possible to add a line of code that can be used with non-special weapons, like NeedsResearch = 0/1, that, if set to 1, would make the weapon check the tech tree for dependencies?

As an example use, you could set it so that quantum torpedoes require research. That way the quantums on a Sovereign wouldn't fire until the appropriate research has been done. It can already be done with replace weapons, but this would cut down on the number of odfs and could have interesting uses in mods.
