I just had an incredibly cathartic round of "Fleet Operations"!
Let me set the stage: Old Space. I've chosen the Borg (Directive: Assimilate) versus Hard AI Federation (Admiral Mayson). I'm a "turtle"-type player, so while the Feds are expanding all the way to my doorstep, I put a cluster of torpedo platforms around my base and start doing my research and resource collection. I then put together a group of four Assimilators just in time for the first Federation strike force to attack: a mix of Intrepids, Monsoons and Sabres.
That force is destroyed by the defense platforms, but I notice they've gone and built an Outpost on the second-closest moon pair near my base. It'll open fire on any ship that tries to pass, and I don't have enough resources to build some Cubes to destroy it.
So I build another four Assimilators and take over the station instead. I get a construction ship in the process, so there's now an Adaption Matrix in my base as well.
While my assimilated starbase being recrewed and repaired, the Federation's ships are getting more advanced: now they're sending Canaverals, Steamrunners, Akiras... and my Transwarp Scouts have spotted Sovereigns and Defiants incoming.
This is my absolute favorite tactic when playing the Borg... it's what makes them my favorite race so far. I built two more Assimilators, wedged them in the main "corridor" connecting the two sections of the map, and assimilated the most powerful enemy ships: Sovereigns, Defiants, Galaxies, even two Descents. I didn't bother with the smaller ones; they slipped by but were shot down by the Outpost.
Every ship I assimilated was immediately sent to the Adaption Matrix for repairs. Almost without noticing, I ended up with a fleet of over fifty Federation warships, the most powerful ones they had. Guess what happened next.
The battle ended with 499 Federation ships destroyed, only six casualties on my side - all assimilated ships, no actual Borg ships lost.
All of which is a roundabout way of saying I never had this much fun with "Armada 2". So thank you, "Fleet Operations" team, for an absolutely delightful experience!

I'm Glad you like the mod. I have nothing to do with creating the mod(I am just another player/modder), but I am glad we are still getting new members that enjoy this mod as much as we do. Welcome to the forums and this little comunity, and I hope you have many more fun games your self.
