Well I apologize for the frankness, but they couldn't release it without complete authorization by Activision, and if they did they would need a new system for online play. Steam maybe? just a thought, anyway, patches wouldn't be as they are now, the whole balance of the game could not be changed every 6 months if they did this. Although I think it would be cool.

fleetops already has a system for multiplayer, tunngle, which is free to use.

they would only need activision's help if they wanted to sell fleetops. if they made their own fleetops CDs that do NOT contain the original a2 disk and still require the a2 disk as it is currently, then gave away the CDs for free then there is nothing anyone could do. but who can afford to make loads of CDs? also fleetops would still need an original a2 disk, which is the main wet flannel.

Having FO recognized by Steam is something I wouldn't mind, though. Don't know if downloading it from their online shop would work...

if steam ever distributed fleetops i would hope that the current method remains as well, as i will never use steam.

actually any distribution of fleet ops lies with paramount as they have the rights to any distribution  of the star trek franchise. now throw in activision, cbs , rockstar and a hint of maddoc and you have a bit of a mess.

paramount only have the feature film and dvd distribution rights for trek, CBS got the rest.

activision are involved too as they published vanilla, they merged with blizzard to form activision blizzard and are majority owned by vivendi.

mad doc got renamed rockstar new england which is a subsidiary of rockstar games which is a subsidiary of take two (yeah companies within companies within companies).

so CBS own the trek brand, activision blizzard would probably need to ok it, as would rockstar new england.

Since it is highly unlikely Fleet Ops would get box distributed (I think the best case is an authorised standalone download as per the recent thread about RPG-X), I really just made the cover to emulate other games to be as highly 'authentic' as possible as if this was Armada II releasing in 2011 with the same PEGI rating and under the GfW branding.

I have however modified them to be GfW and PEGI-less and added them as a second download link on the main post so you can choose between them.

Oh and yes, I did take artistic licence with the Borg station firing.  :D They are Klingon disruptor effects. I wanted the weapon the Borg were firing back with to be quite distinct (inspired by this image), not just another set of torpedoes or another beam to get mixed up with the rest. Also, its quite easy to tell where torpedoes are coming from on a static image with the ship firing it behind it, not so easy with a station. Pulses with a trail make it easier to pull off.

please don't turn this thread into a conversation about distribution rights of star trek licensed games. there is another thread running for that.. :) i thought it's quite obvious that the "games for windows" and rating marking aren't really meant that serious
