So there’s been talk about video tutorials being made. Funnystuffpictures and I have been working on making video tutorials for all the races. The goal of these videos are primarily for advertising Fleet Operations, and to help new players understand the basic concepts of each race. In many ways, some of the tutorials mimic what’s already been done through the Hitchhiker’s Guide to Fleet Operations, but in a more visual way, where you can see the strengths of a unit in action as it is being described.
We’re starting with the basics of each race, the reason for doing so is because we don’t want to put a lot of specific information into a video tutorial that could become easily outdated, as updating this will take longer than updating Hitchhiker’s.
These video tutorials are slightly inspired by the old Armada 2 video tutorials for the races that weren’t in the single player campaign. The hope is to make it more interesting and informative that those videos.
The general organization of the video will be similar to this outline:
-Opening of each race done in Light Wave (similar to Funny’s FO introduction)
-Explanation of the “style” and unique features of this race (i.e., Romulans are sneaky, and get an initial bonus to fire rate). This will probably be accompanied by in game 3D footage.
-Individual ship/special station descriptions.
This will include 4-5 seconds of in game 3D footage of the ship “tearing things up” as funny would say, followed by visual counter table, where ships the vessel counters will be on the left, and ships that counter it will be on the right. These will be done with high quality pictures similar to the ones on the guide. The idea is to quickly give an “at a glance” look at what each unit counters and is countered by. All of this will be accompanied by voiceovers describing the unit. In game shots of the vessel using its special ability will also be added, with voiceovers describing the special.
This is the general flow of how the race videos will turn out, although nothing is completely set in stone. Right now, we’re still working on generating content and hope to include more involvement from the Fleet Ops community. Right now we want to get a video up to “explain our vision” of how these videos work, and then add people who are interested in helping and gain more ideas. Currently, we are working on the Romulans.
Here is a list of all videos currently planned:
-Introduction to each of the 5 playable races
-Introduction to basics, like how to buy supply, mining rates, and other miscellaneous information
-Top mistakes new players make in multiplayer
Currently, all the counter information for all races is complete, the voiceovers for the romulans are done, and Funny now has his uber editing program: Sony Vegas. What remains for the first video is chiefly in game content and the actual counter pictures.
I apologize that we can’t show you anything yet, as that would be easier, but we wanted to actually post what we’ve been doing and what is going on. Right now we’ll be asking for content help from anyone who has fraps and a youtube account. Hopefully in the near future we’ll have some good stuff to show you guys.
Update: October 15, 2010
Just figured I would mention who is "on the team" as it were.
Mal: Project Organizer (and doing a terrible job of it ). Hosting the Romulan and Dominion video tutorials.
Funnystuffpictures: Co-Project Organizer (and doing a terrible job of it. ). Video editing.
Boggz: Hosting the Klingon video tutorial. Consultant (a fluffy title that means exactly nothing ).
Myles: Hosting the Federation video tutorial.
Yandonman: Hosting the Borg video tutorial.
Also, Mort will be designing some LCARS for the counter tables we will have. Dominus is a consultant (a fluffy title that means exactly nothing ). And just added is Megadroid, who will be potentially working on an in game tutorial via MMM, which would be awesome.
Also, there are several people who have expressed interest in helping create some footage content, which we need badly. At some point, I would like to expand the roster wherever we can, but our focus right now is to get some working videos up so that people understand what they will look like completed, and then we can add some more peeps.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....
I love Sony Vegas
So I am currently editing the Romulan Video right now, and like Mal said, I gotz to have footage! It would be fantastic if some of you could either capture or go through some replays in order to find some shots of specific types of ships in action so we can actually see what Mal is talking about!
For Example:
"The Serkas is an Artillery unit that fires a Quad-Cobalt Torpedo capable of doing area damage..."
So we would need some awesome videos of this happening ingame!
If you want to get involved and have any questions you can contact us by email, messenger, pms, or even on tunngle.
My Email/MSN is Funnystuffpictures@hotmail.com while Mal's is Ziklag78@gmail.com

You seem to like pointing out 'Consultant' means nothing...

Well if it was anyone but boggz....

The term consultant in real life has always been a big fluffy title that means nothing. Efficiency consultants are like: You all have to use the same kind of pencils and now you have to use this font that uses less ink to save money. Wow, we saved so much money, so that we can give it all away to the efficiency consultant. That's awesome!
Those who can't do, teach. Those who can't teach, consult. So I like making fun of consultants, and I like giving Boggz and Dom a hard time. This was a two for one deal.
