Could someone explain to me what the hireable mercenaries do and what you could do with them

Okay hireable mercenaries are not in beta 2. Secondly they will have added bounses such as new weapons, ships, and extra credits.

hireable mercenaries will allow you to hire vessels you can't build (for example repair or artillery ships) for the exchange of credits similar to star fleet command

Where can you 'hire' a mercenary? At a starbase?

you will be able to hire mercenaries at neutral spacestations which can be found on beta3 maps
