hi me and my friends were wondering if you could make the planets destructible and colonizable. that would bring more strategy and fun to the game

Welcome to the site.

Destructable may be possible or may not. They have health but no special code I can see to make them invulnerable, so it might be a hardcoded thing.

Planetary colonisation is missed by some, but it was considered too unrealistic to colonise a planet in a battlezone. I don't know if it will be included as a 'defend the colony' game type, but it likely won't be back as a run-of-the-mill feature.

Couldn't you make a planet out of a "station" that looks like a "planet"?

No shields or weapons but would have stupidly high Hull (because it's uh... a planet) and could be manned by crew as per normal. You'd need to use special troopships to invade and take over!

its not unrealistic to have a science team or something land and set up defences.

Mabye planets could have a random bonus giving them a tactical use? Like this planet gives shields a boost, this one cause special energy to recharge faster.

Mabye planets cause ships to heal faster in there AoE.

Doca mentioned something a while back about planets being useful if a starbase is built near one.  For example, you might receive a small supply bonus over time for having a starbase over a planet.  He was looking for ideas, so if you guys have any about bonuses for an area, post them.  It sounded like they could implement almost anything.

I'm pretty excited by these ideas. Maybe using a planet to provide a small area defense bonus? Or perhaps have a large neutral planet in the center of a map and have one team or another have to secure it to receive either some map only units or a bonus to supply income?

A bonus for supplies gained over time on a constant basis sounds very likely to me. Noone says all the planets on FO-maps are uninhabited.  ^-^
Defense bonus not so much, because for this there should at least be a colony of the own faction on it or something (which is not FO-like at all).
But, since many ships orbit planets in the series in order to repair whenever they can, why shouldn't ships and stations near to planets get a small repair bonus for hull and subsystems?
