Is there a ship building program out there?

Which race do you like most? What do you like - what you don't like? Discuss it here.

I'm looking for either a text based, or a visual based star trek ship creator (visual would be awsome) so far my searches have turned up empty. Does anyone know where I could find such a program? Does one even exist?

there was a decent one that came with with the game ST-DS9:dominion wars.  so its probably pretty cheap on amazon.

edit, just checked and its really expensive new, but like $6 USD used. Amazon.com: Star Trek Starship Creator Warp 2: Video Games

Ah ok, thank you. I'll have to look into that.

Edit: It won't work on my computer, that and while they had the right idea, they didn't expand on it like they should have. It's far too limited. Thank you though.  :)

Yeah its pretty limited, but it can create some pretty cool designs.

If you are willing to spend $35, buy a copy of milkshape ans just kitbash models. :D

Honestly, I'm leaning more and more towards the second option every day, lol. It seems I have no choice if I want to be become a true modder.

Milkshape isn't too difficult to use, especially since there are many people willing to help get you going.  Kitbashing with milkshape is pretty easy too. Its pretty cheap too.

I can imagine, the only thing I know I will have issues with are textures. I have a list of ships I want to make (you can make ship models from the ground up in milkshape right?) but I will have to make all my own textures.

Yeah, you can do that.  If you find someone like jetfreak or some other skilled texturer, over at msfc they might volunteer to texture a model for you.  There have been quite a few group projects over there where one person will drap up a design for a ship, someone else will model it, and a third or fourth person will texture it.

That is providing the design is good in the first place. :D  Might be something you would want to look into.  If nothing else there are a bunch of other, including myself over there who are always happy to help new and experienced modders alike.

That would be really great! I'd love to jump into a group project, I can make ODFs well enough to be semi useful. But the main issue is like you said, having ideas others would want to get in on. I threw out a poll on a klingon ship not long ago, no one liked it.  :( As for someone texturing for me, I will look into it once I actually build a model. That will take some time though, I will be asking for help when that time comes, so any advice or pointers you could give would be most appreciated.

The current ideas I have for scratchbuilt ships are

-A klingon ship I designed
-A federation ship I designed
- The klingon S.D.S
-A fed textured vulcan ring ship

And I want to do my whole cross race mixed tech ships, but that is just textures, not actual model building
