Maps that you play on?
Which race do you like most? What do you like - what you don't like? Discuss it here.

Personally the group I play with seems obsessed with Holiday at Risa. It influences the game play with the fact you run most of the game with 3 moon sets. Its larger size means that a "warp in rusH" frequently can run into 4-6 defending ships so its much less viable. Borg also get the shaft?
Are there other maps that also give you those kind of advantages or disadvantages?
What other maps do people play?

Hmm, the ones I like the most (off the top of my head) are "First Strike", "Holidays at Risa", "Open Fields", "Winds of War", "Asteroid Halma", "The Very First Map", "Cube", "The Reef" ...hmm, having trouble remembering more
I'd say hands down that the Reef is the best 1v1 map because of tactical possibilities... but it does give an edge to non-Borg players due to larger amounts of resources. Open Fields is probably the most balanced out of all these maps as it is just large enough with enough passages, and the nebulae are well balanced etc.

all is well unless both players start on the left of the map. then they both compete for the same 1st expansion and the better-turret-system-race wins, lets call them the feds for short. i prefer 'field of death'/'the frozen depth' over 'the reef'.

Those are the other 5 player maps aren't they? I never liked those as much... not sure why, but I'll be sure to play 'em more to see if I can fit myself to their style.

yea, those are 5p. it's not like i don't like/play the reef, i just dont think its a fair map. for ex. top-left vs middle-bottom: middle-bottom has 1st expansion twice as far as his opponent and its much harder to defend.

I agree, it can be unpredictable... which sometimes makes it most infuriating . For some reason I just like the way it is laid out better than those others--I guess it is the assymetry, as well as (at least I think so) the fewer moon pairs. I haven't played on those in a while though... mostly been playing team games and 1v1's on Open Fields to test some things.

For single player I like caged-style maps, like nirvana II or big, very open maps like eraudi or the undiscovered land. As I tend to play with a setup of 5 AIs vs me + 1 AI, I usually ignore the smaller maps, 6 players or less.
Still, in multiplayer, I always leave map choice to someone else. It adds to the challenge, and I need to learn to play in strange or uncomfortable maps, so choosing the same maps would make me complacent or too closed in my preferred tactics. You cannot do that against human opponents.
