Firstly I want to say that this mod is absolutely spectacular.
It's a feast for the eyes and has reinvigorated my Armada 2 love
I do have a question however, I didn't see this covered in the FAQ and have read the Romulan Mixed-Tech Analysis (as that's who I'm currently playing as).
I'm trying to understand how Mixed-Tech actually works.
Here's my scenario:
* Playing single-player in instant action as the Romulans (chose Helev as General)
* Captured Federation construction ship.
* Built yard.
* Researched Alien Technology.
It allows me to build 2 ships out of the possible 3 on the Romulan Mixed-Tech Analysis page.
I then captured a Klingon Construction ship, built the yard again, but get the same 2 ships.
This is where I'm not understanding how it's meant to work.
It SEEMS as if you capture any construction ship and build the yard, capturing further construction ships does nothing for you.
I thought (and this is probably where I'm confused) that if I captured a Klingon construction ship, I'd get different mixed-tech ships.
Could someone explain it to me - I apologise if I'm being particularly dense or if this is covered elsewhere.

you've got the basics of mixed tech down fine. when you do the mixed tech research (research alien tech), it usually grants 3 ships.
let me guess that you're able to build the talon repair refit, and the leahval with torps. but you don't get a generix frigate refit.
that's probably because the generix frigate refit isn't in the game anymore. the mixed tech pages are out of date.
when you say you got a klingon constructor and did their mixed tech as well, did you build the yard with the klingon constructor, and do another research alien tech? a rom player with klink mixed tech gets different ships, including the awesome saeiheirayeaheirh (sp?). if you just built another yard with the fed constructor you would only get the fed ships again.

Yes, that's right (don't have the game open currently so can't be 100% on that.

I did indeed build a yard with the klingon constructor, but the research alien tech button was greyed out, as if I'd already done it.
I'm not sure if this is relevant at all, but was playing with alliances mode - is it possible that in alliances mode, it has trouble 'seeing' the construction ship as 'your' ship?
Are there any factors which may have a bearing on why it does this?
I have the game I'm playing saved at current, but capturing that Klingon construction ship was a nightmare, they really didn't want to let it go

maybe if you've already researched tech for a race, you can't research tech for another race. try start a new game as romulan, then get klink mixed tech.
having a different race as an ally lets you build their mixed tech yard from the start, without needing to capture a constructor. having an ally is the easiest way to get mixed tech. capturing ships is a pain for non borg races. if you can wait til late game romulan, the tavara is great at capturing.

This is where my confusion stems from - the documentation and description of mixed-tech certainly sounds like you could research multiple alien techs and I've read nothing that says if you capture a construction ship and use it for alien tech, you then cannot use alien tech from other races.
Will try your suggestion later - will start a new game (teams), set myself as Romulan, set myself on the same team as Klingon.
Then will capture a Fed construction ship and see what it does.

i wasn't aware of such a restriction either, but it's uncommon in multiplayer to see one mixed tech, let alone two.

All races use the same, single Mixed Tech research. There shouldn't be any limits, I've used mixed tech from 3 races at once before.
The research odf is called all_mixed_tech instead of specifying a particular race.

So does this mean that:
* Capture alien construction ship.
* Build Yard.
* Research Alien Tech.
* Build Alien Ships
You can capture another construction ship from another race, you'd not need to re-do the research, but you would have to build the yard and the ships available would reflect the mixed-tech of the race who built the yard?
E.g.
Play as Romulans - capture Fed construction ship, build yard, do research. (You now have Rom + Fed mixed)
Capture Klingon construction ship, build yard (You now have Rom + Klingon mixed)

i play a lot instant action and multiplayer games and i explored all mix tech ships just for fun, because it is usualy very slow in pvp games...
if you are romulan and capture fed constructor, build yard and make reaserch, you get rom-fed mixtech ships
now you capture klingon constructor, buid yard (reaserch is done already), you automaticaly get rom-klingon mixtech ships
and so on for other races....
you can not get from rom-klingon mixedtech yard same ships as from rom-fed yard.
mix tech yard looks the same... perhaps that is the problem, important is which constructor build the particular yard...

Hi there, yes it's the latest version and what you're saying makes sense - the yards look the same, which may well be where I'm getting confused.
Will fire up another game and closely examine the ships in each yard, see how or if they differ.

I now know why I was getting so confused.
I'd built a Fed yard at start, not a Klingon yard.
So when I built another Fed yard, I didn't get the extra ships - hence my query.
Thankfully, now - with the Mixed-Tech page, I can now tell which yards I have built.
As a suggestion, would it be possible to have some identification on a yard when built as to which alien tech it houses, so you can see quickly which yards you have?

Unfortunately, no. All the Mix-Tech yards look the same. You have to peek at their construction/build menu to figure which tech they are.
I simply build the yards in consistent rows and keep the relevant constructor parked nearby or just build the different yards a good distance from one another.
BTW, if you're wondering why the various mix-techs for the Romulans seem to be missing ships, I THINK you need to research the normal refits from the Romulan research stations to open up the third Mix-Tech ships at yards missing a third vessel. As I recall, many of the Rom mix-tech ships are based on REFITS of their vessels, not the stock vessels. So I think you need access to the pure Rom refit versions before the Mix-Tech refit versions are buildable.

I've now taken the time to look at each yard and the ships it contains, I hit upon the same idea as you, to keep the stolen construction ship next to the yard in question for easy identification.
I'm now playing as Fed, have all Mixed-Tech yards (Dominion, Borg, Klingon and Romulan) - only because I went on a mission to capture construction vehicles

Change the name of the station in the odf to to something that identifies the race like "Experimental Yard: Borg Tech Research" and it flashes on-screen just by moving the mouse over it. Even helps with putting them down in map editer.

You should steal a Fed vessel as well. Depending on which avatar you pick, you could gain access to tech from the other avatar. I usually play Risner as Fed. Nabbing an AI Fed constructor usually gives me access to SOME of Mayson's tech ("some" because of how Fed tech works for new vessels with chassis research). Other matching race constructors will usually give you full access to the alternate avatar tech. (Like having both Dominion avatars.) But again, it depends on which avatar you pick. The AI tends to stick to one avatar and cheats anyway.
