I'm doing a conversion of Star Wars Fleet Command from Stock A2. It was going to be a personal star wars mod but i'm thinking about releasing it. I was wondering if I needed the permission of the original makes in order to release it, as most of the models are theirs. If so and they are on this forum, would they consider giving me such permission. I am prepared to release the New Republic side which for now is done as an avatar of the Federation.

As it seems you can contact and ask Major A Payne for permission.

An additional important note, especially relevant when your mod contains a lot of work from other authors and mods:
If you can't reach the original author, check the readme of the respective content. If the readme allows free redistribution or you got permission from the author, you are fine. If neither the readme contained such information nor could you reach the author, consider the permission as denied.

Happy modding! :)

I've looked at the readme and it's not very clear. It just says the models are the property of their respective creators.

'The concepts and ideas used in the development of the Star Wars: Fleet Command mod are the property of the ST vs SW team and of Night Software Inc..The models, images, and designs are property of their respective creators. Any changes made to this mod by 3rd parties should be run by the Star Wars: Fleet Command team lead, Stalker. If you wish to have additional features in this mod, please consult Stalker, and he will determine the viability of adding them to a future patch.'

This *might* be mere hearsay, so don't quote me for truth here! but, I remember hearing that a lot of the Star Wars models used in that mod were converted from the stock models in X-Wing Alliance, hence the lack of any specifics in the readme. I've no idea how you'd check though.

It's easy enough to convert from .OPTs though, and the stock XWA ones are low enough poly that they would have been handy for the old days of Armada modding, so it's plausible.

All models and textures in Star Wars: Fleet Command have been made from scratch. Many older models and textures are based off the designs used in the LucasArts game X-Wing Alliance, but are not direct conversions thereof.

I think this sums it up.

Ah alrighty, well, they must have been very faithful representations for me to get confused

I do recall some hoohar over models being converted from 3rd party OPTs (Darksabers I believe, from the XWA Upgrade project) and used in an un-named RTS mod without permission. I believe that involved modders working with Star Wars Empire at War though. Perhaps thats where I got my wires crossed. Anyhoop, not important :)

Permission to use the stuff in the mod has been given out before. You should be fine to just ask. :)
