Monsoon Class Origins
Which race do you like most? What do you like - what you don't like? Discuss it here.

Here's my idea as to why the Monsoon Class was created. I really do hope that it fits in with the storyline already in place, and please give feedback on which parts you like, and what you don't, etc.
And so, without further ado (how is that spelled, anyway? ), I give you the Monsoon Class Origins Historical Record:
In 2393, the Federation entered the Second Klingon War, and during this war, Starfleet began to look seriously at their fleet backbone, which was the Excelsior. Although a very capable ship, the design flaws became more and more apparent during engagements with next generation vessels. Although the prototype of the Excelsior II was finished and production was under way, it was considered too slow to fill the role that the Excelsior did, and would become to expensive to maintain if engine output was increased.
So, it was decided that the Excelsior Class was to be upgraded to the specifications that the generation required. Unfortunately, the vessels became too costly to mass produce and many basic -not to mention large- flaws remained. So, the Advanced Starship Design Bereau (or ASDB for short) began looking into new spaceframes that could be as easily mass-produced as the Excelsior was. So, the Monsoon was concieved. Although lacking the warp capacity, along with the photon banks and exploration prowess that the Excelsior had, the Monsoon made up for that in maneuverability, along with a highly compacted warp drive the size of a suitcase. It also lacked the "gooseneck" the the Excelsior had between the primary and secondary hulls. This made it more structurally sound than the Excelsior, for the most part. Finally, it has an anti-destroyer "Proximity Torpedeo" that rarely misses. So, the Monsoon was classified as an "anti-destroyer", but it can be so much more then that.
With the Monsoon having filled the ranks of Starfleet, it became known for it's heavy shields, small cost, and Proximity Torpedeo, and it became a "picketship", or a screen for the larger vessels, a role in which it excels, but was not meant for. The irony has not escaped Head Designer Optec (he requested that his real name was not announced). During an interview, he confessed that, although he wanted it to be versetile and flexible, he never intended that it be a screen, rather, he intended that it be an interceptor for larger ships and destroyers, a harasser of sorts. However, a week later, he decided to go aboard one in battle, and noticed that many of the Bird-of-Preys were following the 3 Sovreigns that the 12 Monsoon squadron was defending, and the Monsoons were given orders to intercept them once the Sovreign Classes used their Engine Overload, and so he was treated to a rare sight of a 1:3 ratio fight against the Bird of Preys.
In the end, the Monsoon is truly a destroyer of large caliber, fufilling the roles of an anti-destroyer and heavy destroyer completely, and with low costs, this vessel is an amazing replacement of the Excelsior, and will serve well into the next century.

Still think the Monsoon is a waste of space.

I agree with Andre. How about replaceing it with the steamrunner class, which is suposed to be smaller than the akira. I would love to see it in the game as something other than a dang artilarry bucket.
Interesting back story though.

Play Risner and you might not think it's that useless
Here's what the FO archives have to say about the Monsoon. It isn't much, but it is/was official:
"This heavy armed Destroyer was designed by the Star Fleet Intelligence for special tactical missions. The special Energy relays in the saucer section of a Monsoon Class vessels allows this unique class to use two Phaser arrays at the same time, but only at a short distance."

Wow, thank for the feedback.
@Andre
No, it's not a waste of space, and I believe I explained why it's not in my story.
@Dominus
Thanks for that tidbit of info, I'll make the necessary changes to my backstory... sometime .
I hope I get more feedback on this! I'm hoping to write more in-depth (sort of like this one is ) stories on the new ships in FO, but I'll remember to check the newsposts first!

Hehe, good luck finding stuff in the newsposts... the info on ship history is actually on the old FO site: back in 2006 and earlier

Oh no, don't worry. I look through newsposts in my spare time on the site while waiting for people to post. I'm thinking about doing one on the Canaveral Class next, so if anyone would help, I'd appreciate it! However, I'll begin writing in a week, so that my creative juices are already flowing!
AACK!!! I ACCIDENTLY TURN ON THE TYPE OVER FUNCTION!!!! NOOOOO!!!! Stupid me...

Yup, that's why I've disabled my "insert" key . I can get you the information in about an hour (when I get back)... I think it is on the site as well.
I think you misunderstood me though... what I meant was that the only ship info on the current site is on the Hyperspace Artillery, the Phalanx, the Canaveral, the Cehlaer, the Pyramid, the Eresis... and I think that's it (off the top of my head). You'll have to go to the old site to find other info (hence the Monsoon information). You think I should compile that in the Apocrypha page too? Might be helpful if people (like yourself) want to compile more history

Ok, here's the Canaveral's 'lil history:
" The Canaveral class was originally designed for the Federation and not for Starfleet. It was meant as a small all around vessel, which would allow the memberplanets of the Federation which don't have yards of their own to build their own vessel and explore space or guard their trading vessels.
During the Dominion War Starfleet refitted many Canaveral class vessels with long range Phasers. With the Dominion war over, the Canaveral class became a common Starfleet vessel."
