The special of the Negh'Var works by overloading the Ion torpedo launcher, but it doesn't get that weapon until it reaches officer level. How does it overload a weapon it doesn't have?

well first it technobabble technobabble technobabbly babbly babbles the babbly babble, then it charges the technobabble gun with antimatter radiation, before launching it all in a deuterium torpedo.
thats how i understand it.
maybe the neggie special could just be changed to firing several (maybe 5 or 6) torps (of whatever type it has) so higher rank would do larger damage as its a better torp.
maybe the photon special would be weaker than now, but have less cooldown. and the ion special be larger and more damaging with longer cooldown like now.

Yup, Star Trek loves its technobabble and you have to ignore it if you want to enjoy the series (and the games). I mean, consider that travesty of a reboot, WTF, Red Matter, they really didn't even try and come up with something convincing.

I've heard it was to get Abram's "red ball" into the movie, since he likes to mark his creations by putting a red ball somewhere in them. As far as how red matter works, it was intended to be a way around technobabble by simply not trying to explain how it worked or why it does what it does, but it ends up worse than technobabble because it ends up changing every time it's used without the characters saying anything about it changing. Of course, it ends up being partially explained of how it works (apparently they forgot that they were trying to get rid of the technobabble), and the explanation given (black holes if you light it on fire) makes absolutely no sense in any way you think about it.
With technobabble you can at least expect it will work only one way until someone gives a bullshit explanation to say it has changed what it does. And usually it makes some sense how it works (e. g. adjusting frequencies on phasers), even if the words used are just random things that don't mean anything or have a meaning that is irrelevant to what is being done (since phasers are supposedly not light saying that the frequency is upper EM band doesn't make sense.)

wow I never heard of phasers being set to an EM band. Sensors yes, but phasers... wow.

The only time I remember anything set to the 'upper EM band' is the shields in BoBW.

I think Quaddmgtech had it right, and those were the phasers . Both hand phasers and ship phasers.

It was the shields. Geordi recommended setting the shield harmonics to favour the upper EM band.

I thought the phaser modification to pwn the Borg was upper EM band, been a while since I watched BoBW.

Easy mistake to make, since the phasers get modified whenever Borg are involved.
