Without colony ships and orbiting metal collectors planets don't seem to have any uses, do they?

they look cool, it would be cool if they had some kind of weapons those.

I think they will be colonizable or armed in the future, for now their eye candy.

In v3 the usage of planets is just to look good
but in future versions - with the upcoming mapevents & triggers of v4 for example - we hope to make them an interesting element as places of trade, economy and.. warfare again

But, really, the warfare idea for the game would be interesting.
