Questions about the game

In battles what are the silver and then gold bars that pop up over the ships and what do they do for the game?

The bars next to the ship are officer ranks achieved by defeating ships in battle. Each rank grants an increase in offensive and defensive value. The more experience your ship gets, the better it fights. Sort of like in Birth of the Federation.

and its not only better stats, sometimes they get a new upgrade (shrike gets the passive ability of the spy, intrepid gets neuralbiopads, excellsiors get a larger attackrange and so on) and kick some serious ass ^^

to bad the borg ships dont.

As soon as it get a gold bar, it gets new tech. It is good that the Borg don't get it, they would have to apply it to all ships together or it wouldn't be very Borg-like. That would ruin the game.
