Yup, I was about to say that but you already got it. Replaceweapons like Defensive Patterns can cause problems, as well as a large number of Romulan abilities. Any chance you get, it's a good idea to push away from your yard a bit so a few-second delay doesn't cause your ships to die.
As effective as repair yards are, you don't want to get stuck continually cycling through them while the enemy pounds on your ships.
It's possible to play slower, more built-up games of Fleet Ops, as long as you're still willing to defend yourself and join team skirmishes in the early game. The trick is to learn how to make your late-game strategy work out, and often it's more about planning with your allies than how well you control your ships.
I would recommend that both of you go watch my 2v2 video replay of me and Clintsat a while back, on Star Traffic. You can see how we lost because the enemy established a stronghold in the middle of the map and I didn't join Clintsat's forward base. Even with a small number of ships, the strategy was deep and the micro probably wasn't harder than what it takes to beat AI Merciless. There was a rush of sorts, but it was a forward-building rush not an attacking rush.
So you see, to me it feels like the same amount of fun that you would get from a long, big-fleet game but it takes less time to play. Sort of an efficient fun.

i'm getting better with the synthesizer... but its still slow. Even when I only spam out of two large yards, and one small yard I get shortages. But then I get huge surpluses because nothing builds. So it just screams at me with 7000 di and 4000 tri with 56 supply, buy more! Don't mine it!
So, I'm wondering what build orders I can queue with two synthesizers.
At the moment, I am doing T15s, and perhaps c17s or b5s.
It's just a learning curve I suppose.
At the moment, I'm thinking Dominion have worse supply issues than Klingons.
I mean, EVERYTHING dominion costs supply. Perimeter, small turret, ships, even bugs!
Seriously though, doesn't Dominion have it worse that Klingons. Dominion can mine supply true... But Klingons can gain it through rank ups. But a klingon ship doesn't cost a fortune in supply... But the supply costs of klingon supplies at the star base is very very steep. So I suppose that's true.
Interesting.
The funny thing is the borg. I've hardly played them. Here and there yes. But it's been all the buzz around here for so long that Borg faction re-do! So I keep thinking, you ll start, and then everything will be re done and you won't have learnt anything. In any case....
Edit:
I've done four synthesizers with three supply miners each, and yes it gives you huge supply, but still I dunno. That's costing upwards of 3000 di. With synthesizers, and mining ships and all. Also the allocation of the construction ships to get those up. The tri is certainly much less. The thing is, if you pause construction for a short while, the supply really fills back up quickly, but I can not for the life of me get a big spam of ships going.

As an addendum, I took part in an online game last night. Was a great fun 2v2 game where my inexperience in multiplayer was telling, but still managed to get a few licks in before I was eliminated.

Those were some pretty big licks, too.
