Two additional ideas (not really turret replacemenst)
1. lightly armed sensor array
2. Orbital or asteroid stations (armed)

the Federation, the Romulans and the Klingons will have the sensor station (sensor satellite, spy satellite and scout station) as it is already implemented. They become more important, becouse scout vessels will loose their tachion detection grid in the next beta, to make cloak more powerful. Sensor Stations are unarmed
The Federation, the Romulans and the Klingons have different Types of defence platforms (Federation=Pulse Phaser, Klingon=Torpedo, Romulan=Pulse Disruptor).
The Borg have their sensor station and Defence Turret combined in the Phaser relay, which is booth armed and provides a tachion detection grid.
The other races will have more different ways of defending their base (Ciadan stations are all armed, Noxter 'stations' do automatically do damage to nearby vessels by producing a nebula around them.. and so on). Every race will probably only have one kind of defence station.
