If it gets them playing with the source code that could be pretty awsome.
But I bet EA would end up sending lawyers harrasing people modding pre-buyout FLOPS, or offering it for DL.
As for patch releases, personaly I say do it like this:
.0 - Big release
.1 patch/balance
.2 patch/balance
.3 balance with patch as needed
.4 balance with patch as needed
.5 balance with patch as needed
.6 balance with patch as needed
.7 balance with patch as needed, start adding new textures/models from next version (only where they overwrite old ones)
.8 balance with patch as needed
.9 final version update, with changes angling towards the next version
.95 beta version of next big release
Of course, the entire time be working on the new version bit by bit, have each patch update focus mostly on balance or bugfix issues.
