The FleetOps forum is a big place, and the Map Exchange Subforum is no exception. For those of you who play online (perhaps competitively), but just can't seem to find 3.1.0 and above converted maps that are given the *fun rating* by most of these folks, I thought it'd be nice to make a list of the most played (or perhaps "soon to be played") Fleet Operations maps. This of course does not include those lovely fan and developer generated maps which are already bundled with the game
.
If I'm missing any maps that you just absolutely believe should be on this list, just post!
Star Traffic-Boggz
Endless Pain - Sheva
Ice - Gamer
Beta Aquilae - Phoenix
Tau Ceti - Phoenix
The Lost Sector: Total War - Sutee
Yes, right now it's a very short list, but I hope that will change soon
. Note that if your map isn't up here, please don't take it as an offense - I'm sure all maps have their strengths and weaknesses, but that doesn't change that some are preferred over others in online gameplay

Thanks for putting mine up there, Dom!
For future reference: how does one include a link with a custom text? For example the map names that link directly to their topic? Mal does it all the time and I'd love to do so myself when I put up a new map.

No problem
Hehe, funny how this works - I taught Mal
Use the third button on the bottom left hand row called "insert hyperlink" and you'll get something like this url] . Stick an "=" and the url and insert the text you want here [/

Okay.... here are my maps that I like most (due to awesome balance shown play after play).
Polluted Ice and Unholy Water
So far I didn't see anything about not recommending your own maps...
Open Feild
Strength in Darkness (v2.0)
Phoenix Maps
Lets do da twist
Favorite stocked one is Rain (by Boggy).
He does a real good job for maps like that.

There's a map called "rain", which is really cool. I will look that up.
EDIT: Oh, its a stock one? I never host games, so i don't know. Boggz, it is really really great!

Nothing wrong with shameless advertising.

Aye, that's one that's now been included in the official download

Absolutely fine that you recommend your own (and other's) maps Gamer

That being said, I'm going to vote down a few - if others have objections, feel free to voice them

Open Field was enormous and just simply had waaaay too many resources for all but AI games in my opinion - by the time you get to an enemy base, they can tech quite far up

Strength in Darkness has narrow, easily blockaded entrances to the base and quite a few moonsets - which is actually a similar complaint I have to Endless Pain - but that is more remedied because the blockade can go both ways, which makes it more strategic.
Personally I quite like the design of Phoenix's maps - but the Accretion and Asteroid Belt maps are quite a bit uneven if you have a Borg player

If there were more mid-sized maps with small nebulae in interesting arrangements that would be quite welcome (or even large maps with the first expansion very far away). Right now there are a great deal of maps that have either very defensible bases due to asteroid rings, or heavy additions of nebulae which tend to cause some nasty issues

Oh I am SO working on a new map right now that is exactly that! A 2 v 2 that I could probably even alter to be used for different team arrangements.
I couldn't agree more on the idea of having less easily defensible moons that are more spread out as to encourage division of fleets and better tactics for harassment, patrolling, and all-out harassment.
Shameless plug: "Outpost" Is a topic where I go into depth about how map design affects gameplay overall. Maybe some of that will give people new ideas as to what's possible now with speed alterations.

Thanks for the votes of confidence folks
. Tis much appreciated.
Due to limited space? I'm considering upping their sizes as they are both quite small maps.
New Map; Beta Aquilae. Did this map fill the role adequately?

Actually Beta Aquilae is my favorite of your maps so far. The scarce resources, relatively large size and completely asymmetric design is right up my alley

One suggestion: NEVER put moons in nebulae. Though it may seem like a cool idea at first ... it's just ... not that way in practice. Damaging nebulae just kill your miners and require too much attention to use at all. I always wanted to but there is just no good way of doing it yet.
The bottom right starting point has two things: it's both the hardest to reach and the farthest from extra resources. Haven't tried it online yet. Feel like that starting place is the most likely to try a rapid tech-up.
Overall though I have to say that I really like Beta Aquilae!

To add onto what Boggz said, big shield-cutting nebulae basically make it Borg territory as well - very hard to play in situations like that
