Well, the main point of the small block trigger is that it gives map makers the ability to add more intricate designs and as an attempt to spur on some more creative designs, other than the same old rehashes of nebulae, asteroids and moons, without making the map humungously large
. This particular trigger is especially useful for some really cool looking asteroid fields and I've had some cool instances where groups of smaller ships have been able to lose the larger ships through "escape routes".
It seems a shame though, because it was L33T's map pack which spurred me to create this map and mini-mod but if people aren't willing to try out new ideas, for fear of losing compatibility, then new mods are going to be insta-fail the moment they're released
. Lol, you should see the stats on Astro for my mods page and Solar Storm; woefully poor by comparison to the traditional maps
.
Truth be told, I'm fiddling with bits because I'm bored of the same old tools and consequently I'm getting a bit jaded with map making. It's a little disappointing that this map appears "nice to look at" but is otherwise unused but that's the way mods go now and then anyway.
I suppose the only assurance I could give is that if you made a 2nd installation, then you could keep the first installation as your "online" game, so then you can at least try it out
. I would recommend you try the map because you never know; you might like it
. If enough people like it, then perhaps it'd give the devs a reason to add a mod (devised in 5 minutes, consisting of one odf and one additional line to the edit_triggers file - hint hint...) to the next release of FO and then, there would be no compatibility loss
