Most of your questions about map-making should be answered by Dom's Guide.

  The Starting Position section might be a little under-developed so just make sure of the following things:

1.  Alt+click will place your starting positions.  You can't place them on a doodad (like a dust field or asteroids) so you'll have to place them on open space and move them if that's the case.

2.  Double click on the white starting circle and open up it's preferences.  Make sure it's says "Camera_X".  Obviously X = whatever the next starting position is.

3.  Once you have all of your starting positions placed, hit control-R and open up the starting positions tab.  You should see a neat little overview of what the starting positions look like.  If it is still not correct, exit out of that window and re-open it.  Sometimes it takes two tries for some reason :D.

4.  In that window be sure to set any player slots you don't plan on using to "Empty Player" in that little drag-down menu.  That will just help avoid any problems.

Hope that helps!

  And yes, if the game works after deleting your map it's likely because you made certain titles too long or added a character to the title of the map itself or some such thing.

I believe I have found the game breaking issue. The bmp file as it is too large. You need to resize it so that it is no larger than 160x160. After that, it will load up fine.

There are a couple of niggles to work out first, before it can be put out for an official release:

  • Give it a Mission Title and sign the Author box with your name :D. That way, it'll show up as "Enemies" by "Facist" in the maps list.
  • You also need to set players 3 to 8 as "empty" (Ctlr-R to bring up the editing box -> Start location -> Settings -> Type)
  • Finally, if you have a look in the Enemies.txt file, you'll notice these two lines:
    // Path: "Camera_1" (2 points)
    // Path: "Camera_2" (2 points)
    You need to change it so that they both say "1 point". To do that, close Enemies.txt and open the map in the map editor. If you now try to grab one of the starting location dots, you'll notice that you get two dots with a yellow line between them. Grab the first dot and delete it. Do the same for the other location and save the map. When you next look into the .txt file it'll say "1 point".

.

Then test your map.
Check all of the game lobby functions. Can you:
    [li]see the map name, author and bmp?
  • click "minimap hidden" and see your map?
  • click fixed placement and change your start location?

If one of these doesn't work, quit to desktop and reload A2FO and it usually sorts itself out as long as there are no major issues to be ironed out.

I think this is all in the guide but alas, the webpage is not loading up today!

In paint, go to; Image -> Stretch/Skew then set it roughly to about 60% for both stretch boxes then crop it using; Image -> Attributes.

I have attached a screenshot of the menu you need to be on.
  • Make sure you go to the "Start Locations" Tab (Red box)
  • Select the player slot you wish to edit, from the drop down menu (Blue box)
  • Change the Player "Type" from the drop down menu. (Green Box)

Dom, maybe you could add this screen shot to the guide as this menu screen doesn't appear to have it's own pic :)

Facist, I edited my post above with some additional info by the way.

You mean this pic Phoenix? Image from here?  :lol:

I jest, don't worry :) . I hope all the bases are covered in the map making section - basically what Boggz said is nearly word for word what's already written there. Sometimes it just helps to say it twice of course :)

If you see anything missing there though, it is a community effort, so I hope I didn't scare you off of making suggestions :D

haha, intriguing  :lol:

Well, if I might, I missed that pic as it's under a different heading to where it probably should be. Perhaps that picture should be moved further down the page under the "Adding Start Locations" heading and swap it with the Environment Tab screenshot which should be moved up the page under the "Map Size" heading.

:)

EDIT: I'm glad to see that you're map making career is going full steam ahead Facist!
