I've been trying to replace the stock planets because the models aren't very good (too blocky). I was thinking to either tesselate the spherical models in 3ds max, to make them rounder/more smooth, or to replace them with models from other modders. But it's just not working. The .sod import tool throws an error on the stock planets and planets from A2 mods don't come with atmospheres. I know how to add an atmosphere model to them in 3ds max but the result never comes out quite right. I just can't the atmospheres to be semi-transparent/hazy, i stead I get really white pixellated clouds, even using the same textures as the stock planets.
Does anyone know how I can make the atmospheres look better? Do the stock FO planet models have some kind of sprite (apart from the corona, I already checked that's not what makes the difference)? Or do they have very special material mapping settings (alphasettings for the illumination map, or something)?

After a reinstall of 3ds MAX (2010) I was able to import the planets in the 64-bit version, for some reason. Turns out there were indeed custom opacity mappings/settings. I managed to slow down the planets' (and Suns') rotation speeds and tesselate the models to make them more round. They're now included in my Roots Mod: https://www.moddb.com/mods/fleet-ops-ro ... s-roots-30
To illustrate, I've attached before-and-after pictures of a planet, the old one from stock Fleet Ops and the new one from the Roots Mod (which also changes the background starfield), both at the 2560x1440 resolution.
