Possible bug, though I will check some more: when I've clicked on an unresearched special ability for the Klingon Veqlarg (the artilery ship) the game has crashed... I'll try it again to confirm.

Edit: can't replicate it... so don't know what the crash is (and didn't save the file *stupid*)

Klings are defintely the problem
