Congratulation guys.
FO deserves it.
Let's hope it isn't revoked citing expiration of the deadline by which games that win actually have to become games for people to play.

All I can say is that I have equal connection to both mods, and Elite Force (particularly the RP aspect) still holds a special place in my heart.

Ah, that's cool to hear, gratifying as well. There's nothing more depressing or irritating to see a good FPS game turned into a virtual chat room for RPGers.

'Tis a good thing indeed. Hopefully it will mean more people might pay attention to the game .... and (maybe) even donate

You, my friend, give the distinct impression of someone who speaks of something he knows nothing about.
I wrote a semi-trying-to-be-nice two-paragraph reply here, but I just deleted it.
I won't even try this time.
I played Elite Force for almost five years. This RPG factor you so ignorantly deride is what has kept the game going this long. I daresay the intricacy of many RP maps have brought forth some of the highest quality mod work I have ever seen.
Please, save your disappointment and irritation for something that deserves it, like every other copycat, unimaginative FPS game that hits the market. Honestly, what is the point of just pointing and shooting? A good game needs far more depth than that, and that is much more that a matter of opinion.

I gotta say that I agree with Red here: almost all games need a good campaign or two in order to draw customers, and online "RPGing" fulfills this aspect, rendering the repetitive nature of an FPS (likely) more re-playable. Plus, most people enjoy the story-telling aspect of FPSs just as much as the game itself... but I guess it is more a matter of opinion in the long run . A lot of the games that fail to attract people seem to be those with poorly thoughtout plotlines or the ilke.

Well, its true that everyone likes a good story and all that, but, to be frank, I can't stand RPGers on FPS games and if that's the only way it can "survive" then its better off dieing. I enjoyed EF and EF2 back in the day but then a better game comes along and that one eventually dies off, as is the natural order of things. If I want an RPG type thing, I'll go play a game that's designed to do that. An RPG mod can be the highest quality mod ever made, but in my book its still inferior, vastly so, to something like FO who's purpose is to make the original game much better and yet still keep the same general spirit of that game.
Its like half assed converting an oil tanker to serve as a passenger ship. Sure, you can do it, and in terms of bulk volume, do it fairly well, but nobody's going to make a winning argument that turning the tanker ship into a passenger carrier was a good idea. Sure, we can use the FPS game as a RPG and it might serve in that capacity in an efficient manner, but its never going to be right and proper, just, at best, a bit of well done coding.
The point is, I consider it pretty sad to log into what used to be an excellent FPS game filled with people with genuine skill at fragging and find servers full of people who can RP you out of existence but rarely have a clue as to use the game for its original intended purpose. If that's what does it for you, well, more power to you, but I'll mourn the death of the game while I install its successor that still has genuine players.
Oh and just FYI, if "pointing and shooting" is what you see FPS games as, I find no surprise in learning you were/are an RPer for so long.

I suppose it's all a matter of taste. You don't ask someone who drowns himself in beer to taste fine wine and give you an educated opinion. Same with gaming. For those who prefer the blunt approach, anything less is just not comprehensible.
I have no problem with that. The only problem I have is that you are so tactless and condecending about it.
Do me a favor; never go into politics. There are enough people there already with loathsome communication skills. We don't need another one.

Hahahahahaha...
Not only did I consistantly play standard Elite Force multiplayer, I played it during the same time period that I RPed, meaning that I did them at the same time.
Oh, and currently the only game I play regularly is Battlefront II (very much a shooter, in case you aren't aware), which I play at a competitive level. One thing worse than condescending alone is doing so out of ignorance, and you seem to me to be very ignorant.

Now, the results were beautifully shown up in a cartoon award show covered by Hailing Frequency you can find here.
Hey - Thanks for mentioning our toonshow coverage of the Star Trek Games Players Choice Awards.
We had fun doing it, and hopefully, the 2008 awards will be bigger, better, and even more succesful!
