drool, i think i'm going to like the romulans even more. 100% damage boost, surprise countering is going to be fun.

Sorry, I misswrote there: Romulans get a unique set of passives called "Doctrines". :)

Are Doctrines comparable to Federation Synergies?

Ah, well it could just as easily be said that I misread.

You were talking about romulans, so the faction specific doctrines apply to them.

In any case, nice touch to distinguish between races.

adding to passives and doctrines: (borg) standard directives, (dominion) mandates / founder's mandates, (Klingons) conquests or conquest imperatives.

Although I assume if this is what you are going for, these have already been assigned perhaps.

Passives, doctrines, directives, mandates, and conquests.

Edit: Was I even close? ... I was going to suggest "managerial approaches", but figured that might be a bit too Disney.

They are comparable in the sense that they allow us to bring faction-specific bonuses/strategies into play and to allow the Romulans and Federation to use a myriad of strategies and require varied fleets :). For Federation, those are the Patterns and synergies that accompany them.

However, I caution not to think of synergies/Patterns and Doctrines as real analogues, because they don't serve the same proximate purpose. Synergies from active special technologies are a real core of Federation gameplay, while Romulans depend less on the passive Doctrines for any synergistic effects and more for their nasty-combat capabilitites - but we will do a newspost expressly on Doctrines that should hopefully cover all the cool stuff there :) .

While we will add passives or active technologies that encourage vessel mixing and result in limited synergistic effects for the other factions (Borg, Klingons, Dominion), it is most likely that they will not use the same 'faction-theme approach' as the Synergy/Pattern and Doctrine features. But well, a lot can change over time, development, and public release :).

The base Generix special sounds pretty cool. Will be interested to see whats new with the "Rain"(or is it Reen?).

I've always thought it was Ree-yen, like the French version of Ryan. Romulan ship names have strange pronunciations though!
