So I tried to host a game to play a little co-op.. (can you play AI co-op??) I have a public IP when I need to, and I also have no router, firewall, or windows firewall enabled to get in the way;yet I still had no luck. I could create a lobby* and create a game, but when my friend tries to join it says its on a different map for starters, and I see the player for about 10 seconds and on his end it says, to some point "the game has been canceled" when it has not... I'm I missing something?? (Multi player / Internet - Manual IP / I enter no IP to host, I think this is proper?)
Let me know what more info you may or may not need??
We both have versions 3.1.5, Win7 serv- and XP client-,

Thanks Alanalpha I'll have a look!
Although it would be nice to get the direct IP to work.

welcome mate
cant remember but i think the devs officaly droped support for direct IP connecting games in faver of tunngle as u dont have to lookup ur ip address each time u wanna play (for thos on dynamic ips its a nightmare)

Direct IP still should work I believe - I don't think there are any plans to disable it or drop support for it

It may not be a problem on your end, but his. Before Tunngle came on-line, this was how I was playing.
Two things:
1) If he has a router on his end, then he needs to set-up the ports per this page:
Gamespy and Manual IP - The Hitchhiker's Guide to Fleet Operations
2) You didn't specify your (or his) Internet connections. In my case (DSL) I have a stupid DSL Modem that acts as a router by default. I had to log into the modem, and set it to "Bridged" connection in order to maintain connection with clients.
I'm not sure exactly why these steps worked (because a client shouldn't need to forward ports), but it cleared-up the exact problem you're describing (and the person I was playing with could host as well).

Hmmm, I'll have to look into it, although I have direct fiber to my home into a "world port" were it is then converted to cat5/6 to a dumb switch, and plugs into my pc. I've never had any keep alive issues with anything else. So it is possible its on his end?
I'm not sure what there world port does but authenticate me and pass traffic.
