Tunngle shutting down

Here you can arrange online encounters and reminisce over past online battles.

Tunngle has apparently just announced that they are shutting down - tomorrow.

This is the notification posted on their homepage:

For a reason they are citing "pending requirements of the new European General Data Protection Regulation", which would cost them too much to implement. Sounds like a load of bullshit to me, their business model is probably just turning illegal. Bet the scumbags still made bank selling their "lifetime accounts" and serving tons of ads until three days before closing down.

Regardless, since Tunngle was more or less the official online multiplayer service for FO, that's a heavy blow to our small but resurgent online community.
We're planning to move over to Evolve, which will require people to group up with one another beforehand since they don't have a lobby room feature like Tunngle, only a party-based system with a max of 10 people connected at once.
This means an extra step for anyone playing and will make prior organisation more important than ever.
We have our TS and Discord servers for organisation, but will FO survive?

I think we will be fine, we have had quite a nice little resurgence. Anyone who wants to play should join discord, it is going to be more important now for scheduling games, in addition to teamspeak. We are actively looking at Evolv and Hamachi for vpn, any other suggestions would be great. We need to try to test out these different vpns and come to a consensus on the best one for all, as we go forward.

If we could get the game going on game ranger would be much easier, however, game ranger staff must add the game to its support list

Thats very strange and only a few months ago i decided to support them by buying lifetime thinking theres no way they could go down considering how big tunggle was. Bad luck. There still might be a chance for it to come back to life if someone else takes over maybe.

I only know of hamachi, evolve and gameranger but since evolve doesnt allow permanent lobbys it makes it a poor choice.

I havent used hamachi in a long time how does that fair?

I was all so hoping to use gameranger as it work very much like Tunngle but i was thinking if your in the Star Trek Armada 2 lobby in gameranger you should be able to load up Fleet Ops and go local area network and play it that way with gameranger.

I guess the best thing of all would be for the Dev Team to put Fleet Ops on Gameranger as far as i know it 100% free to do but as they busy working on NX and do not wish to put anytime in to 3.2.7 i guess this will not happen.

Do the Dev Team have any plan now for 3.2.7 as what they use to run it on has now shutdown (Tunngle) will they set something new up like Gameranger or is it just down to us now?

Problem with that is not everyone that plays fleet ops even knows about armada 2 and that might shrink the community even further.

I wonder if it would be possible to simply rent a VPS or cloudserver and just create an ovpn profile for fleet ops users to use when playing fleet ops and connect using openvpn it might even be possible to intigrate that into fleetops 3.2.7 and any future version of fleet ops if it even ever happens. Of course that would cost money to run the server but it might be possible to run it on donations given that something like that would only cost in the region of £40 a year give or take.

Discord paired with our own VPN server would solve the issue of tunggle going down. It could probably be set up on the host of the fleet ops website.

No, fleetops did not die, we are just playing via a different vpn service now. Tunngle is not fleetops, we can use alternatives.
