ie9 isnt just broken under xp, it refuses to install. microsoft have dropped support for xp. ie10 wont support vista either.
the reason they say is that xp doesnt have direct2d for graphics acceleration. but firefox indeed manages graphics acceleration under xp (as well as vista and 7). its obvious microsoft just want more people paying for win7.
windows update is usually set to auto update on computers belonging to people with low iq. the internet explorer updates were never pushed as important, only optional updates. so maybe windows update didnt automatically install the browser updates.
the only important one that would come through would have been the browser choice program, forced on microsoft by the eu. this box would have presented a list of browsers for people to install if they wanted to. most people would probably just close the window and ignore it.

@Myles: i'm pretty sure newer IE versions come with the service packs, which are not optional, at least it offered to install the newer ie version as well. hm...
Using a 10 year old OS in an enviroment connected to millions of other PCs, without any updates, is retarded anyways, no matter if it's Windows, Linux, or MacOS.
So true...

The answer is 'dumber' as well.
No Drrrr, the answer is some people just dont care, that doesnt make them dumb. If you dont do much web brousing it doesnt really matter what browser you use. If you LIVE on the internet, chances are youll likely get more serious about what you use, either way assuming someone is dumb because they dont have a real preference it dumb in itself IMO.

Or cracked versions... most of the Netscape (yes, Netscape) and IE 2-6 users that visit the guide seem to be localized in China.

Don't care means there is no legitimation in complaining then. So if these people complain, well 'dumb'. If not, fine but still 'dumb' because they could surf much saver and with higher comfort. Ignorance is not an excuse for beeing dumb. If they consider to use other then IE6 but don't do it for certain reasons, fine and 'not dumb'.
If e.g. the Amish don't want to use tech, they are dumb. If they don't want to use it to preserve their culture, fine (but still strange).

I dont recall seeing ANYONE complaining about their browser on this topic. And again you assume that people would be safer using another browser and your "dumb" for using IE, well if all you do is look as some emails and thats about it your not gonna be too worried about what browser you use. Let me put it this way, if I lived in Mexico in a big drug town, I might consider getting a souped up armored car to keep safe, but since I live in a relatively small quiet town thats really not necessary for me. And as far as Ignorance is no excuse for being dumb, well how often do people do dumb things because they were ignorant? It happens and thats how we learn, by doing dumb things, then we grow wiser. Your generalizing people that just dont care what they use just because what they have already has worked for them for all this time. Yes I agree that its a bit silly to still use IE6 but if you never really dive into the internet well chances are those people dont care, they have no reason to go get that armored car because its not really necessary.
