Does anyone know where I can find a (preferably free) program that allows you to write in curved text, similar to the war Registry numbers on Starfleet ships are written?

Erm, Microsoft Word?  That's free isn't it?

Perhaps not, doesn't OpenOffice (or LibreOffice) have something similar to WordArt?

How about the Gimp?

Inkscape can do it (make a path and then apply text to follow) Should then be a simple act of exporting as pdf and overlayin it on the texture of choice.

Interface can be a bit clunky, but it works
