I'm not sure what to make of this either. I mean who will it benefit? Will little people (i.e. modders) be able to use this to descend on other modders who steal their work, or is it just meant to benefit big media companies?

This also strikes me as one of those kinds of laws for which someone could easily conjure up false "evidence" and demand a site shut down.

That's actually semi-appropriate considering that a law like this could easily be used to reproduce the Red Scare kind of conditions we saw in the 50s and 60s. Back then it was actors, now it'll be websites.

*sigh* Some times I think the Web has grown too fast for its own good.

It is almost certainly meant to benefit big media companies, since they're the ones who have the legal resources to take advantage of it. The really big shocker is that it could allow the DoJ to essentially cut off any ties US websites have to foreign sites of the DoJ's choosing.

As for false evidence: we already have something for that, it's called the DMCA.

I would love to know what kind of benefits and kickbacks Leahy's getting from media companies to push this bill. No one fights this hard for such a controversial bill unless there's personal gain in it.

This is what you get for allowing corporate lobbying. Politicians are not voted for, they are bought.
