So for the last 4 hours I've been trying (unsuccessfully) to get Red Alert working on my Windows 7 netbook; (computer still down I'm afraid, so probably no Fleetops for awhile ). I've exhausted what few computer skills I still remember and I've looked extensively online, with no success. Everytime I try to load I get:
"The procedure entry point SMapLS_IP_EBP_12 could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll."
I've uninstalled, set compatibility, etc. and all sorts of things to no avail, and I've far too tired and irritated to think of anything else. Does anyone have any ideas, I'm completely stumped at the moment and sick of looking at this screen with repetative error messages of some kind or another.

Which Red Alert? The original one that is now available for free?

Are you using the original version, the free version from the EA site, or the First Decade version?

I've seen that error before, the program is trying to use a function from windows 9598 that is not in any newer versions of windows. Make sure you have installed the latest patches, all I can say without a specific version like the previous 2 have already mentioned. Also you can run the setup program itself in a compatibility mode by using the explore command in my computer, right clicking the setup file and setting the compatibility mode for that as well.

I'm pretty sure that the origional wont work anymore unless you use some kind of emulator or something.
I don't know if this free version has support for the later versions.
Also using a 64bit OS will decrease your chances to get old windows games working!

I have a .rar file with all installed files laying around, I could send it to you over wetransfer.com
only thing you need to to is extract it to hdd, set the compatibility on the exe files and it works (tested on vistax32, 7x64)
just let me know

Try this:
Download the free version of red alert (its english, dont worry):
Vollversion: Command & Conquer - Alarmstufe Rot - Download - CHIP Online
Unpack & mount it (with Daemon Tools for an example)
Use the Red Alert Setup Manager v0.98 for install:
http://ra.afraid.org/html/downloads/utilities-3.html
Start it and play.
Other workaround (shouldn't be necessary):
CnCWorld | Command & Conquer, Tiberian Twilight, Red Alert 3, The First Decade

does it also have the add-ons, counterstrike and aftermath?

It does not include the addons. You may install them, if you have them.
As far as i know the first 3 CnCs have been released as freeware, third one aka tiberian sun includes the firestorm addon.

I already added the patches and set the install and game both to combatibility, it still gives the message.
EDIT: I'm not sure I put the patch in the right place, where should it go? Tried the setup manager, didn't work.

If it's the free version does it even need to be patched? If the patch setup isn't working then it either is completely incompatible with your system, the game or you've got no chance in hell of getting it to work. The latest game version only supports to windows 95 even with patches. According to some articles I've read there is a folder in the downloaded version named "XP patch" that you need to install for it to work on newer systems without using an emulator. I think the last sold version also had two install programs in it, the normal setup.exe and another that was "setup95" or something like that for windows 95 but I know nothing of what the free version is so I can't be of much help.

Red Alert came in a dos version and windows 95 version.
To install the 1st you need a dos box, for the 2nd install without soundcard as administrator. After installing set up the soundcard with setup.exe.

WTF!!!!
Ok guys, RA and even the one that started it all, the original C&C work just fine in Windows 7 x64.
1 word for you...
"DOSBOX"
Easy to install and configure. Enjoy!

Running RA in Windows natively is still much more comfortable than in DOSbox. It runs perfectly fine on any 64 bit OS with the application of some fixes.
Check out this RA installer for Windows: Command & Conquer Communications Center Community forums - Red Alert
Also check these instructions to fix the widely known inverted colors issue that affects many older DirectDraw titles on Win7: Print Page - Fixing weird colors on Windows Vista/7
Edit: Errrrr, sorry the linked version appears to be limited in terms of content. YOu might wanna check it out anyway sinc ethe package already includes the most important fixes.
