Why does fleetops take so long to load?
Want to say something off topic? Something that has nothing to do with Trek? Post it here.

I was just wondering, and maybe this has already been answered, but why does fleetops take so long to start up, or is that just for me?
Whenever i start up fleetops it takes a painfully long time to connect to multiplayer.

Yeah I sometimes get stuck on the "Checking Game Assets" when connecting to Local Area Network too. One time it took 7 minutes. It usually only does that the first time I try to connect after comp startup though, after that it connects pretty fast. I always thought it had to do with my internet connection though rather then the game.

Armada 2 would seem to have an inefficient system of checking files.

this has been answered in another thread recently.
but to go over it again.
the delay when checking system files is when fleetops looks at the files and figures out what version u have. so it will only let players with the same version play together. it also prevents cheating via modifying odfs etc.
the reason it takes longer and longer each patch is cos they add new stuff like odfs.
several ways to reduce time:

Dont run other stuff on your computer at same time. especially stuff that accesses your hard drive

Defragment your computer often, as checking game assets requires a lot of disk access and finding the files, if u are really clever u can put all the fleetops odfs in the same area on the disk

Exclude the fleetops data directory from your virus scanner, this means that when fleetops checks these files, your antivirus wont scan them too.
if suggestions are welcome i was thinking that starting the file check when fleetops is started would give a headstart.
if the player clicks tunngle before the check is complete then the game waits until it is just like now. but if the check was finished before they clicked tunngle then there is practically no wait.
dont know if this is actually possible though just thinking.

Well im sorry that i had to open a new thread when there was another already out there.
But thank you for taking the time to address my questions, and thanks for the suggestions to, i havent fragmented my computer in a long time, i totally spaced out on that
How would one go about putting the files in the same place on the disk? or would that be too difficult to explain?
Also @ doca, good to know that a speed up solution may be on its way at some point.

i use mydefrag, it automatically puts files in the same place if they are used together often.
its ok if u dont do this, as long as u defrag.

Actually, it has more to do with your processing power and the speed of your hard drive.
But, yes, this is definitely the most annoying aspect of Fleet Ops for me, and I'm sure for many others on older hardware, since this game is fairly low-end as far as graphics go (meaning people with slow, old computers can still run it) I think it would be a huge benefit it we could speed this up. I know for me personally the check usually takes 30 seconds, but it seems that it takes much longer for the majority of players.
ray320: Try this. That company makes good stuff, you might also want to check out CC Cleaner. Both are free, too.
