Does anyone know why the uniforms were changed during DS9? There was no explaination on the show. Also why would the writed change the clasic design.

Also I saw a federation ship that look like a cross between a defiant class and a bird of pray. At first i thought it was ment to be a fighter but it was larger then a Miranda! Any ideas?

TOS had a skirt uniform that was nearly exposing underwear it was so short.

The TMP era, and heightent conflict with the Klingons, led to more military uniforms (minus those tenniswear white uniforms.......)

By TNG, the skirt was back and even men wore it, then in DS9 tensions were rising again, the Dominion mostly but other forces as well, and the uniforms became more tactical once again.

It also shows that the cardassians were, even during the border conflicts with the federation, no real threat, as there was no uniform change due to them.

Post DS9, I'd see the uniform going back to a more colorful display of your service branch unless there was a major long term war.

I liked the new grey uniforms in the latest TNG movies

maybe the new uniforms were designed with a new material that was more comfortable and practical.

also i think they just liked changing the uniforms to keep it from being boring i guess. doesnt really hurt anyone to change them.

it seemed that captains had a choice between the voyager uniforms and tng uniforms, as sisko chose the voyager uniforms while picard stuck with tng uniforms. in generations they had mixtures of the two, presumably they were busy changing over then. then the grey ones came in and everyone upgraded.

doesn't an episode in ds9 explain why  tng and ds9 have different uniforms?

I thought there was an explanation because the uniforms did not "change" when they come in contact with ship crews there still wearing the standard uniform of the TNG, this can be seen in all the crossover episodes, when Worf arrives he is stilling wearing the standard uniform and does not change until he takes over as the operations chief.  I think its a station uniform or something to do with them being on a Bajorian station?

Ironically, as it has been mentioned before, the TNG uniforms do go through another change in the movies to the more grey uniforms which are not DS9 like at all?

I go with the idea of them changing periodically, but getting a period where they can move into a new one at their own pace. Starfleet isn't as strict as modern militaries, so allowing personal their own 'change period' wouldn't be too hard to believe.

id have to go with it being a personal get used to the change thing because in an age of replicators you could simply toss in the old uniform have it de-moleculerized  and replicate the new uniforms in seconds.

as to the defiant with wings ship you sure its not this

as for its size it could have been camera angel that made it appear larger than a Miranda

Yeager Class

That would be an Intrepid/Fed Fighter cross, rather than Defiant/Bird of Prey.

mort, you know better than to mention that here, blasphemer. >:(

also the bajoran ship having wings can be explained away by saying it might be for atmospheric entry. the federation fighter can also use that explanation, just to a lesser degree, maybe it got use as a fighter craft as they had nothing else to do the job. the bops i guess can use it, but its tenuous as we dont see them fight in atmospheres much. but then again those arent actually wings, just places to hang guns.

We have that IRL as well.

I was in the US Army when the switch was starting to the digital cammo uniforms, not everyone got them at once.
