I have recently found fleet ops and have been playing for a few weeks.

I can say that i am REALLY loving it and that is was just the type of well thought out RTS i was looking for.

With more RTS games success is based on resource domination and early game play. However with FO i am finding it is a bit more challenging. Especial when the AI(hard difficulty) is Dominion. I have played about a dozen or so games with 2-6 Random race, hard difficulty AIs. Each time, not matter my race i am overwhelmed with in an hour or so by scores of dominion ships. For each one i destroy there are literately ten or twenty to take it place.

Even in games where i am the borg (optimize) with dozens of cubes, spheres, and assums i am over run as soon as the ai is done mopping up with the other races.

What is the best way to counter this?

Thanks!

Play online against real humans as they won't have hundreds of ships and neither will you as it is a completely different game.

The AI on Hard get's a resource and ship building handicap so they have more resources than you. Also the Dominion is a supply heavy race which the AI has an unlimited amount of that a real human player does not have so they will be slowed down by this. The AI is meant to help you understand units and builds so that you can play online, it isn't really a standalone game in itself as most people playing online quickly realise it is not the same in the least.

If you want to slow them down then keep raiding their mining stations and ships so it has to keep redoing that cycle in it's build list slowing it down from moving onto more ships till it has replaced those. If you are fed turret like crazy till you can build a mass of ships but bare in mind in a human vs human game this wouldn't work :)

I just read that in another post somewhere else. Bummer.

My time is somewhat erratic so playing online with other people pay prove challenging. What and where is the best place to meet up and play? TS or that tungle thing?

You play through Tuungle so you will need to install it, the best times are usually late GMT time and weekends as there are plenty of people on to play with. Loads of new people lately as well for you to start learning with so you don't need to feel scared of us pros :)

Install TS so you can work as a team better, especially if it is a mixed game of new people and old people as the oldies like me will help you with strategy, what to build to counter and when to attack or raid and so on. Really good way to quickly learn stuff in a short space of time.

I also suggest watching the latest replays with commentaries as you can learn loads from them :)

I found a somewhat successful strategy but its a bit risky. It also requires the Mayson avatar as it doesn't work as well with the chick avatar.

Take some throw away ships and three constructors and send them at the enemy main base. Send the warships (not the constructors) towards the back of the base to draw away as many of their ships as as far away as possible. While you are sacrificing.......yes sacrificing because they will all die horrible deaths, have the constructors that you had tagging along behind them start building torpedo platforms just beyond the base. Don't activate them till all the donuts are built and then do them all at once. They will then proceed to pound the shipyards and any ships that they produce.

Two things to keep in mind are that the later in the game you are the more turrets you will need to make because end game three turrets are only going to slow them down a little bit as the Dominion and Romulans spam ships like crazy.

Alternately you can just send out the warships and the constructors and have the warships just sit there or protection but I have found that sometimes the AI just happens to do their kamikaze runs whiled I am building and since the constructors are so slow they will end up dying and while this isn't horrible with the Federation it is absolutely tedious with very slow constructors like the Klingons have which is really the only other race that this strategy works with. Its pretty much useless with the Romulans to build turrets.

I have successfully done this strategy building a couple of starbases next to each other but that requires a shit load of resources all at once. They also lack the artillery range of Fed turrets and obviously starbases have a much lower damage per size ratio than turrets.
