B2: No Sound Anywhere

Well, the topic description pretty much says it all. I am at a loss as to how a simple game mod could cause such mass destruction on my PC, but I'll try to describe what's happened.
During installation, I got an error message at the end that said:
Error opening file for writing
C:WINDOWSSYSTEMMsvcrt.dll
Then I attempted to play the game only to see it crash after the opening movie, but that wasn't my biggest concern. I noticed there was no sound in the movie. I then logged on to AOL to describe my problem only to notice there was no sound there, either. I checked some of my other applications and found that there was no sound in any of them. I refused to think that Fleet Ops was responsible for this so I ran a virus check to find the culprit. (AVG) It found nothing. I was then forced to take my PC to a technician to correct the problem. Fifty dollars poorer, I attempted to install the mod again. I got the same error message, but the game was playable - minus the music (which is in a seperate download) but the sound worked fine. I then attempted to shut my computer down only to get another error message: something to do with a server. (This also happened the first time.) When I rebooted the computer this morning, all of the sound was gone again, except for the boot jingle. This kind of thing has never happened to me before, so I'm forced to conclude that Fleet Ops is somehow responsible.
Technical Specs:
I have not bothered to install the patch, since I don't see how this could correct a system-wide problem, and it wouldn't take away the initial error message I get when installing, anyway.
I use Windows ME
I have 128 MB RAM (sad, I know)
I don't know what graphics card I'm using, but I think it's 8MB.
My drivers are up to date as far as I know.
If I missed a critical piece of info, I apologize
No one else has had this problem, have they?
Hopefully I can get the sound back without shelling out another fifty bucks...

Welcome to the forums!
never heard of that problem before, i can't think how fleet operations could have created these problems, therefore armada 2 should cause the same errors
no problem with that, it's a known issue many ppl had before, thats just an error in the setup which tries to copy that file although it is in use by another application, but no required to copy anyway cause on most windows configurations anyway existent.
i'd like to help you anyway. could you please go to Start - Run type dxdiag click OK, then, on the bottom of the program, click Save All Information... save the file and attach it to the forum please

Thanks. To follow up, I completely uninstalled Fleet Ops and my sound is now back. I don't know if everything else is functioning normally, yet. I'll let you know.
Let me say that I really like your mod, even though I have so little memory the game moves at a crawl. Looking forward to the next version.

ok, i can give you only 2 advices
try to install directx 9 - and i am really surprised too you can run fleet operations as we had reported problems with 16mb graphic cards
the other opinion is to get a new computer. i don't know what else you do on your computer, but if you are planning to play some newer games you will have a problem anyway so maybe thats the right decision for you. just depends on your needs.
ok, whatever, did you know i do have the same computer you have standing here (not as my primary computer of course
). from what i read from your stats your computer should be a desktop gateway computer maybe with sony cd recorder. when i have time i will try to recreate your problem, but currently there is no os installed on it (i would like to try to install windows xp on it, not ME)

Actually, I'm surprised this old Gateway can run this mod, too. It can also run Starfleet Command III, and that has a listed 16 MB minimum. But I wasn't exaggerating when I said Fleet Ops was running at a crawl. Moving the cursor was a real chore, and I had difficulty reacting to changing battlefield conditions. I assumed I could run Fleet Ops as well as I could run Armada II. That was naive. This is a four-year-old machine that was underpowered when it was new. It was originally 64 RAM and under 10 Gig disc space. Today it's on it's third HD, and I recently bought a 40 Gig add-on drive. Everything else is stock. I would very much like to get a new computer, but it will be well into next year before I can afford something suitable.
I don't think you can recreate my problem using XP. That is a different animal from ME. Anyway, my computer is OK as long as I don't install Fleet Ops. It's possible that the upcoming Beta 3 won't have the same effect. My old Gateway is so finiky, you just never know.
