Can I not trade(give resourses)/give units to my AI ally?

Can I only give to a human player or what? It doesn't matter if using teams or alliances with trading on I can't give resources to an AI thats on the same side as me. Also I have tried giving it some of my extra miners and any other ships from scout on up to battleship as any race and nothing happens.

Whats the deal? This shouldn't be happening.

I've tried the same thing.  It seems that AI can only trade using cargo ships.  And cannot be given any units.
