A while back I broke my disc for Star Trek Armada 2, and I had to use a patch/crack to allow it to play without the disc.  This patch creates an alternate Armada2.exe file that allows it to run without doing a CD check.  Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work for FleetOps.  I've tried copying this alternate Armada2.exe into the data file as suggested here, but it crashes.  Are there any other ways to get it to run without a CD?

you could try a disk image, but this is a licensed game, don't go asking too many questions. there was a reson FO wasn't allowed on A2 files for a while.

why so? was it "no-CD" for a while or what?

No, it was not allowed because a very simple file was changed to allow compatibility with Vista... without it the A2 community would have been dead. Needless to say, Doca found a work around, without changing that file... and thus we are all still able to play on Vista and beyond.

Not to sound like a paternalistic, law-abiding zealot, but...

Do not talk about obtaining illegal copies of STA2 around here. I don't want the site OR the mod to be shut down. I'm selfish as that. :)

Keep it to PMs.

Dunno if this is legal or not, but when I get a new disc I always make an image of it and create a backup disc in case something happens to any of the three.

DarthThanatos happens to be correct: the Devs would really prefer it if you did not discuss this sort of thing on the forums (cracks etc) as that could lead to bad things.

Protect me from knowing what I don't need to know. Protect me from even knowing that there are things to know that I don't know. Protect me from knowing that I decided not to know about the things that I decided not to know about. Amen.' That's it. It's what you pray silently inside yourself anyway, so you may as well have it out in the open.

Protect me from the consequences of the above prayer. Amen

Legally, and IF (big if) software gets the same treatment as recordings or books, a game would need seventy five ( 75! ) years to become public domain and be free from copyright laws.

So, a ten year old game is as subject to copyright laws as a game that came out this week.

I happen to disagree with this, but the law is the law and that's how things are.
