I know this site is for Armada 2 which i own and love, but I want to play the original. I installed it on my laptop (Win 7 3gb DDR2 ram, nvidia 9100m g, amd athalon x2 dual core ql-62 CPU) and I also tried to install it on my gaming PC (Win 7 8gb DDR3 ram, Nvidia 650ti GTX, Intel i3 CPU) And I get the same problems with both computers. The menus load fine but when I get into the game the graphics are all messed up. The lighting is all messed up, the ships are glitched and it is slow. I've tried installing patches, i even found a 3rd fan made patch, i've tried doing compatibility to XP and I get the same problem. I would really appreciate any advice on the matter. My next avenue is piecing together an older computer.

Try virtualbox, or perhaps even DOSbox. Your best bet is to run an entire old operating system inside a virtual machine, and try to install and play the game inside that.

A virtual box is a good idea, like Tryptic said. Dual booting with XP may also work, but I'm not sure how well A1 handles dual core systems and the virtual box can be set up as a single core. It does not work in Wine so a tiny Linux install wouldn't work. I seriously doubt that DOSbox will run Armada, but you could try. If I remember correctly, it really needs at least Windows 95. It is possible to install Win95 in DOSbox, but it's not as effective as simply running a virtual box with Win95 or newer.

Virtual machines are not the solution for most old Star Trek games you know.
Vmware & Virtualbox only support DirectX 9 and later on WinXP guest OS, while most "old" Star Trek games earlier than 2003 uses DirectX 8.0 or older. DOSbox will not support running any Windows games, so it's not for Armada as well.

My PC can run Armada I just fine: AMD Athlon II X4 651, AMD Radeon HD 7750, DDR3 RAM 8GB, Win7 64bit. I recommend to install the unofficial 1.3 patch by fleetops team here:

Do not use any other unofficial fix/crack except above one!

And if that doesn't work, you should consider find or buy a old pc/laptop instead.
