How Graphics Detail slider make difference?

Hello,
I would like to know how the Graphics Detail slide bar changed the actual settings in game. It seems when I moved it to 0-3, the background will became 16bit-like low colored, but in ART_CFG.H the difference in details 0-4 only varied in bacground stars counts.

I've tried change LOD distance in ART_CFG.H, but it doesn't affect actual detail in the game. I want to play the game in 32bit colored depth, but tweak detail settings to gain as much performance as possible.
