Installing New Ships

This is mainly pertaining to a stock A2, I do not know if FO has this option.  I notice here and there, particularly on FF, that there are ships you can download.  Installing them is simply a matter of dropping a few files in some folders.  My question is...  If I did want to add a ship, how would it change my game play?  Also, would I still be able to play against others without the ship?  And finally, How would I be able to build it if it is not modifying any files I already have and not replacing already existing ships?

well, i can answer one question,
you would not be able to play against others without the ship, as they have to have the exact same game as you, right down to the contents of the individual files
