Windows 7 FO Lag

Hey all,
I recently upgraded to Windows 7! I wiped my entire drive and reinstalled Armada 2 from the beginning and updated all the files.
I have run the Fleet Ops in Both Compatibility Mode and regular Win 7 mode and am getting stuttering/lag during game play that I never had while playing in XP.
I consider myself above average computer savvy and run a powerful computer system. I'm sure the lag is caused somehow by Windows 7 but do any of you know what the problem is and what I can do about it?
My system fyi is:
CPU: AMD 64 4000+
GPU: 9800 GTX
4 GB Ram
74 GB harddrive (10k RPM)
PSU: 750W

the AMD 64 4000+ is a single of dual core?
my specs are
CPU: Q6600 3.00Ghz (yeah got wrong a few times cracked the box open to check)
GPU: 9800 GX2 X2 SLI
8GB DDR3 Ram
1Tb Harddisk (not sure on its RPM)
PSU: 900W

FO does not require Armada II to be installed
. Hopefully you did not install FO in the same folder as Armada II, as this can cause some problems
. Is your stuttering occurring during explosions? Or all the time...?

Haha No I didn't know you didn't have to have it installed.. but they are in separate folders. AMD 64 is single core 64 bit CPU.
And the stuttering all the time.. every 5-10 seconds, I have noticed it even when scrolling through the battle map and at a stand still. But not necessarily during explosions.
I've never had this problem before Win 7.It always ran smooth with XP and the current system with all settings.. could it be the processor? Or the screen resolution? I've been using 1440x900x32.

Perhaps try reinstalling
. Maybe somebody else here has some better advice however ![Drop :sweatdrop:](/forum/images/smilies/sweatdrop.gif)
Sounds like some issues I read about here way back... but I can't remember if it was fixed with reinstalling, or whether it was a more fundamental issue.

I experience that kind of lag as well, but I think I know what the problem is in my case: I don't have the best computer in the world. Sure FO runs and all, but very early game, especially with the very graphic-intensive Borg, the computer freezes whenever I go over one of the ships or stations. It happens numerous times during the game as well, but in that case it's still loading up a new item, such as a big explosion

Star Trek Armada II: Fleet Operations - Game jumping.
This older thread seems to suggest that it could just be due to how the AI works on your computer... could be due to your processor but I'm just taking stabs in the dark.

Not sure if its the cause, but windows 7 while not as hungry as Vista will still chew at least half again more power than XP, your system is very badly bottlenecked, this can cause problems.
Let me explain.
You have in effect 4.5Gb of memory, 4Gb or ram and and 512mb Gcard. The reason no single core computers are sold anymore is cause this amount of memory effectivly "clogs" up in single threads (single cores). Dual and Quad Cores spread this out and allow the Ram/Vram faster access and less Pagef file usage.
I visual explination would be like this.
Your PC: You have 4.5Gb of Ram, this is trying to squeeze down a single tub (aka CPU Core), This will jam up and cause the Computer to run slower.
Example PC: You Have 4.5Gb and 2-4 tubes of the same size as the origional. This causes jam free access and smooth running.
When a program is running, like FO which isnt the most system friendly game ever made. It is using about 70% of a single CPU, the other processes are also trying to use this, and they may need 40% of the CPU power. So you get slowdowns when the primary program (FO) spikes its usage.
In multi core CPU's the Threads are threaded to balance the usage and more often than not, the non of the Cores will hit 100% usage, resulting smooth uninterupted game play.
Mabye this helps.

I tend to watch these threads highly suspiciously - I really want a 64bit copy of 7 and to ram some more RAM in this rig, but I'm terrified of losing all my games ;_;
Glad things looks like they're being sorted!

I cannot confirm this. I have also recentally bought a brand new laptop. it has Win 7 and Fo runs Lightning fast. my comp is made for 64 bit, but it doesn't have it, and it still runs fine. I would bet that it has nothing to do with windows 7
4GB ram
Intel Duel Core Processor, T6600
Nvidia GeForce 8200m G
Windows 7 32 bit
Wireless b,g,N networking
2, 176 GB hard drives

the only thing is that Armada 2 is not optimized for using multiple cores however a multicore pc would help because the system could offload other processes to the other cores. o btw ive got windows 7 RC1 and FO runs great

good to hear at least not everyone is having issues with FO on WIN7. This eases my mind for my eventual transition ![Innocent :innocent:](/forum/images/smilies/innocent.png)
