Something just occured to me:
If the thing separates when it's nearly destroyed, then rescue both halfs do you get 2 galaxies from it?

I think the new Galaxy looks great but I'm not too bothered about separation. I've never seen a practical application of it you see. Mind you, within FO, I'd like it so that the main focus of separation is not in order to gain two smaller ships but to focus on a retreat strategy to preserve the ship's rank. I think separation should only be an option when the ship is heavily damaged and that upon doing so, the enemy will be automatically attracted to killing the stardrive while the veteran saucer makes a run for it. Assuming it survives, then the stardrive can be build onto it when repairing and it's rank will be retained.

I think one part is supposed to be destroyed automaticaly when seperated. Like the situation in generations, minus the crashing.

Destroyed but only after some left time for fireing ferocious against the attackers of the saucer. I'd say 10 seconds before complete destruction should be fine if it is not destroyed by enemies earlier.

Every time it was used, it has had a practical use...

About regaining a complete ship, what about the resources? Galaxy's are meant to be very expensive.

True, but if they are so expensive in FO, we shouldent be getting them for free... mabey it would be a special weapon effect of the SFC, adding X seconds on to the timer? That might work, if it is a close range effect.

What I meant, was that in the past, playing through various A2 Mods, I have never seen a decent application for Separation that would convince me to use it in place of two standard ships. The whole point of Separation in a tactical scenario revolved around, a) providing an escape strategy for the Saucer Section, b) to offer two targets for an enemy in the hope that attacking from more than one side will give an advantage. Unfortunately "a" has never been applied well in the past (although, as I explained in my previous post, I believe that there is a possible application in FO) and "b" is practically irrelevant in a fleet situation since two standard ships would provide the same advantages.

Part of my gripe, is that it'd be very hard to balance separation without seeming like you're gaining a free ship out of nowhere. In the past it's been balance by extreme cost, but then you may as well buy two smaller ships with a similar total firepower and do away with the hassle of having to recombine them or obtaining a replacement section.

You meant the game version? I thought you were talking about Seperation itself...

It does tend to get screwed up in any attempt to use ingame... That's why I save it for when I'm desperate for ships.

It says if you can get a surviving half back to base, the full ship will be resorted. What I'm curious about is how that part works.

IMHO,  one would think there would HAVE TO BE a build time delay to reconstruct the missing half.

personally I don’t understand the hype over the galaxy class.  it was great an A2.  it was nice to see it as a warp-in on FO.  the triple torpedo special weapon is excellent.  and while it lacked the infamous saucer sep, WHO CARES.  splitting the ship in A2 did nothing but take the enemy fleet an extra 15 seconds to wipe out the fleet.

NEVER in all my years of playing has saucer sep become useful.  all it does is leave you with a fleet of stardrive sections.

I used to take 2 galaxy’s, split them, and re-integrate them to the others half.  it would change the name to the dominate part.  and trying to do a group re-integrate, it never went so well.

now they are bringing it back.  OK I guess.  but then, there are plenty of other canon features that COULD be integrated but we seem to either not care, or not notice.

the ole Enterprise D could do anything, and DID on a weekly basis.  but

the ole transporter, sometimes went OFFLINE.  that isn't a damageable system in FO
the enterprise has probes up the wazoo,  not in FO
the enterprise has 3 in depended shuttle bays and shuttles galore, but cant launch a fighter assault.
what about that little repair beam used to fix Rikers bird of prey.  nope, not in FO
what about the transfer of emergency power to the Romulan Warbird, when most of the senior staff found it frozen in time.
ejecting the warp core to cause a huge explosion (the thing don’t work in FO anyways.  well in fairness, the warp core ejection system NEVER worked in TNG anyways)  it took Be'Lanna to figure that one out.

my point here is...

they are bring back the saucer sep.  whoopee (!)

unless there is going to be a benefit to it, who cares.  maybe if the stardrive section could double its speed after dumping the dish, then it would be worth it.

all I’m TRYING to say is,  if you’re going to do it, make it WORTH OUR WHILE.

in my humble opinion anyways  :D
