That first half of your point is undeniably true, humans always had problems with keeping peace. Personally, I still think it's just as possible that an alien race would be exactly what humans need to see in order to start getting more conscience of responsibility for each other as one whole human race and the planet itself. Until this day comes, it's just speculation at all.

I have faith that any sufficiently advanced alien that manages to venture into our solar system will not be war mongering - to be that way, I doubt they would have been able to develop the technology to get all the way here in one piece... considering the closest system is another couple lightyears away and it is uninhabited

If there is life elsewhere, I doubt all of it will be as 'peaceful' as Humans.

Certainly, but what I'm talking about is life that is traveling in space. I think you need to meet a certain number of criteria to accomplish such a task (and I'm not talking about lying dormant/cyst-like in space and then waking up to colonize) - you of course have to have the engineering skill, but also the will not to destroy your colleagues for those long years in space. Usually that assumems that you've had a great history of space exploration, which implies that you've developed a SETI program, and know that worlds can be inhabited. The fact is really, that if a species is coming here, it already knew that life was capable here, and potentially had even witnessed the rise of our current technological age. To simply wipe out life when it is so rare only fits comic book thoughts, because why the hell are you wasting so many resources just to come here to wipe out the inhabitants. And to say that you came here for a new home? Well, that implies that you somehow forgot that this new home will undoubtedly be polluted, and the natural resources, depleted

Or else it'll be even more peaceful, and we'll be the aggressive alien conquerers ^-^

At the moment it's far more likely we'll never know that :whistling:

Forever or until the day before first contact actually happens, whichever comes first.

What would be interesting is if we encounter an alien race that is less advanced or has never heard of war.

Watch the movie "Galaxy Quest", and you get a cool example for the "never heard of"-case, even for a parody

Oh, it'll happen...even if I have to engineer a fake one to make the REAL aliens come out of hiding...
