Hi! (Thoughts of a newb)

Which race do you like most? What do you like - what you don't like? Discuss it here.

So I've played about 4 games so far. Already you have me addicted. I play federation and heres a few thoughts so far before I get into my questions.
Romulans are pesky annoying bugs. Like REALLY pesky. Stupid cloak. But thats all they really are from my MINOR experience.(just the AI on normal).
I fear the borg. Like REALLY fear them. Six or seven ships will have me cowering in terror(still beat them, sovvies RULE).
Oh and is it just me or is the galaxy a bit weak.

Am I wrong about any of this? Should I fear the romulans and scoff at the borg? Are any mixed tech ships worth it? Spamming sovereigns good/bad? Any general advice not in the guide?(already read it) Thanks in advance guys!

im going to assume your playing on easy, cause other wise spamming sovvies is impossible.

AND THE GALAXY IS NOT WEAK. It is infact right where it should be, about the same as a Vorcha. And you get the damn thing for free, dont think your going to handed a borg cube powered ship for free.

Now try playing online and spamming sovvies.

There was no easy listed so I assume you mean normal?

How hard is it to get used to online play anyway? Not asking about how to be awesome.

As for the galaxy, maybe Im confusing it with the nebula or maybe I just didnt pay too much attention.(when the sovvies start coming out there really isnt much else to focus on).

AI dificulty settings were renamed a while ago. Easy was changed to normal. It's still basically the easy AI.

Welcome to the forums! :D
Fleet Operations is an incredible game made by incredible developers in an incredible way. B)

Since you've read the guide, in answer to your questions:

The benefit to Galaxy and Nebulas, etc. is that you're getting access to cruisers and battleships while everyone else is still making destroyers.  Also, they're free ships that you didn't really have to pay for, but if you go milling through some of the topics in the balancing discussion, you can find threads that discuss this ad nauseam.

We're very welcoming of new players.  Once you get your wippien account and start adding names, it you'll instantly see all the players available.  There's usually 4-6 (maybe 20 regular players at the moment, and some non regulars) on at any given time, but we're growing in numbers.

For online play, I highly recommend trying the strategies for each race in the Hitchhiker's guide, just to get a feel for some strong multiplayer builds and tactics.  There will still be new players who tech up to their most powerful unit, only to realize that they built a whole bunch of buildings and no ships to defend themselves with early on.  If it's your first time online and you're not sure what to do, spamming your cheapest destroyer for a while is not a bad idea until you get a feel for online play. :sweatdrop:

Mixed tech is definitely worth it, for some races more than others.  For example, the Federation pretty much has access to a battleship or something equivalent, allowing them to skip most of the normal tech tree altogether and just focus on mixed tech yards.  Defiants that can cloak are always a good time. ^-^

Oh, and target the canaveral.  Always target the canaveral.  And if you're not sure, target the canaveral.  Wait, what did my team mate want me to target?  Oh yes, something called... a canaveral. :whistling:

Welcome to the forums.

yep, and the reason for targeting Canaverals is that they have a nasty habit of knocking out ship sensors for 30 seconds and so effectively neutering you in combat (never a good thing!). On the other hand, this makes them pretty good support ships for you to build.

The Excelsior II happens to be rather good too. Out of all my ships, they invariably end up getting to Veteran status first and they tend to do better in combat than a lot of the bigger ships. They have Long Range weapons and gain Artillery range with experience, which is a BIG advantage, especially against ships like the Neg'Var at the moment.

Combine that with The Canaveral black out and you have a pretty tough force. My suggestion would be to try things out. You might find the smaller ships have more worth than you think!

Just in case you aren't sure, this is what you need to target.  Make this die first and your team mate will be happy and impressed with you. :)

CANAVERAL!!

ALL SHIPS FIRE! FIRE! FIRE! FIREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

@maheshjr2000

Welcome to Fleet Ops and to the forums. Having fun is mandatory.

Important Multiplayer tip: Do NOT play against Dominus Noctis, Mal or Mort. IF you play allied with them, better get ships out of the shipyards on the double, or you just will see only enemy debris.

There is a thread about recorded MP (MultiPlayer) games. Have a look at some of them and read the comments on the thread. You will learn a lot about fleet handling, ship micromanagement and how certain players, well, play.

I will make all of those Federation cowards die in a blazing rage of my new super weapon! All will cower before me as I introduce the Tholian Empire! >:D Everyone will run in fear of my Tholian Webs!

Not if a Canaveral blacks out their sensors.. Then it'll just be a load of Tholians tying each other up in their own webs.

All I can add is... welcome to the forums and to Fleet Operations

Hope to catch you online soon :) . Oh, and hope you caught the online version of the guide, as the pdf is now only useful for the tech tree and unit profiles, as I have not updated the pdf in a while (while the online version is constantly updated :) )

To observe games all you need to do is set the team option to "observer" (instead of team 1,2,3 etc)  B)

EDIT: stinkin' typo

Nah. We like them when they appear unshielded and in the weapon sights and range of our ships. That is, if we are playing against Federation.

So I played a few more games using the guide strategies this time. It greatly improved my efficiency. I only need about 6-8 norways initially for local defence and I was able to use the warp in to shut down the enemy expansion. However mid-late game saw me still spamming sovereigns. While I tried to use intrepids to take down the enemy base they were cut to pieces by an enemy fleet.

Oh and wippien keeps disconnecting for me.

So are you saying you are only needing Warp In vessels, Norways, and Sovereigns? (and the Intrepids that failed)

You should really try making use of Remores and Canaverals to improve their effectiveness, not to mention Defiants, Excel II's (if Mayson), and Akiras (and Monsoons if Risner). Intrepids are more artillery support for quick strikes on buildings against non-Borg (or if you are playing against Borg, they are more useful as all around killers). In multiplayer you can't get by using so few vessel classes unless you are playing against very poor opponents  :sweatdrop:
