All I can say is hamachi is a great alternative.  Sure, the free version can only allow 16 people, but if everyone has hamachi, you can instantly create 50 free networks, ensuring that you can always play with any combination of players.  Just make a new network and pm the password to everyone that wanted to play or put it out on the forums.  The game performance seems better, as well. ^-^

Usually too busy to play and when I do have a spare moment I like to edit ship stats which makes it impossible to play multiplayer.

Well, I play singleplayer when I get bored, but online gameplay is out the of the question. My stupid ass ISP decided to limit my connection due to where I live, so, none of my online games work anymore :(
