Just a crazy idea but was trying to level some Newtons today and was dissapointed to see that they couldn't. I guess this is partially because it would require a ton of ODFs to be made to cover every possible combination of refit, mixed-tech variant, and ranks.
However, let's imagine a dev would be mad enough to make this.... would you like the idea? If so, what would its elite rank ability be? Or do you think that newtons are more like constructors and miners, just for utility?

Newtons with both Ablative Armor and High Density Shield Generators, the Dominion did not stand a chance.
But seriously, Feds love defense. It should be a cool defense passive.

The Newton should Rank up. At Rank 4 they will get suppressive shielding so that they get reduced pulse damage. At rank 6 they will get the following passive:
Geometric Shielding:
Effect: Reduces Beam and Pulse damage by 15%, increases shield health by 18%.
Description: This equips a special shield configuration that forms tightly to the hull. It thereby is able to suppress beam and pulse damage better. However torpedo damage is slightly more damaging with this configuration. The shield's health capacity is also able to be higher using the same energy because of not having to project it outward like a bubble.

i dont think it should rank, its not a combat ship, its losing its pop gun soon too. so it wont have a way to rank.
this ship is full of engineers not combat officers. it would be silly for it to rank through blowing enemies up.
maybe it could rank by repairing ships, the engineers get better at repairs and the repair rate increases.

I have heard about non-combat ships ranking up though non-combat actions, especially scouts. Haven't heard about that for a while, though, so it may have fallen through.
An unarmed Newton, what a disturbing thought. Starfleet starting to send unarmed ships out defenceless. Though they already did that with the Mediterranean, but civilian ships don't count.

I agree, and really like the idea of ranking thru repairing. I just hope it doesn't end up becoming so effective at repairing that fed Fleets with it become like Roms with shield recharge. A fleet supported by more than one Newton can be difficult to get kills off on. I haven't seen it used much but it can make a fed fleet even more better-than-your-fleet than it was before.
Maybe reparing should require special energy to be used?

why upset?
if u your newtons are actually firing on the enemy then you aren't using them right :sweatdrop:
they are repair ships and shouldnt be used for anything else.
if the enemy sees them they will shoot at them, they have weak defence and will die fast, and the resources you paid for them will disappear.
their weapon is practically useless, its really just cosmetic.
EDIT:

i think the newton should be classed as civilian

You mean only scouts. No civilian vessels other than those were considered, as this is a military operation. Scouts were given additional abilities as compensation. The Med might indeed have a phaser in story, but it doesn't have a military targeting system, so no use. Talk to the Klingons instead
As said time and time before, civilian vessels will not level up - it's Fleet Ops, not freighter, scout, constructor Ops :innocent:.

I was relaying from memory, so certain facts are no doubt likely to be incorrect. I didn't pick a side on civilian rankup, or even vote.
If your Newtons are fighting, then you're more likely desperate than doing something wrong (usually).

desperate to give the enemy free kills?
i'd rather park the newtons next to my starbase and repair its hull to extend its life. or force the enemy to fire at the newtons while the starbase noms them.

Or you are stupidly trying to level up a ship which can't be levelled up ::)

if playing single player and u want to level up easily just cheat.
bring up the chat box by pushing enter
then type "levelup"
push enter and any ships you had selected will rank up once.

Myles, it can't rank up if there are no rank odfs beyond rank 1.

you miss my point, he was trying to rank up a ship by destroying enemies.
for ships which can rank up you can just do what i said.
its quicker than finding some enemies to blow up.
my point was advising how to rank up quicker in general.
