I like the steamy as well.
A no nonsense design, no giant families on board, no plots behind it making it a virtual super ship.. just a ship with border defense in mind. Sturdy and as close to a true warship prior to the Defiant.
The arty version from Armada is almost a travesty.

Cmon dude, lets face it, Aramada/Armada2 were fully travesties.
It wouldnt have been AS bad if it wasnt for the lack of attempt at balance, they just gave each race an equal number of ships, each ship had a 'slot' and was mostly equal, minus the mages mag.... I mean the special abilities

Well I was gonna describe some Romulan supership, like an upgraded D'deridex or Cehlaer...but I just played an FFA where I got a vet tavara. That'll do, right there.
Although it does bring up an interesting point people had earlier. Somebody had mentioned a support Warbird and I didn't like the idea then, but then I realized that a vet tavara would have all the abilities the support warbird gets...
Alright, so we need a weak AOE attack for the first special, either a mine or a weapon disable for the second special, and for the third special a field that increases the speed of your ships nearby. Then the vet tavara (not to mention the support ship itself) will be perfect in every way.

upgrades over the original Defiant are:

2 class 3 Quantum warpcores (second core is mainly used as a backup core incase the main core needs ejecting but untill then it powers the shields)
Quad layered multiphasic Temporal Shields
Deployable Advanced ablative armor (advances in the tech that voyager brought back have alowed shields to work with the armor with a larger amount of durability)

Quantum Impulse Phasers (4 = 360 coverage 2 forward medium range)

Hmm... believe it or not, it would be a steamrunner for me. But it would have Akira like weapons, not a tricobalt torpedo launcher. Also, it would have a 30% speed increase and whatever fleet buffs you can think of .

Hm, as my clear flagship, I'd like to command a B'rel, the most awesomest warship of the Empire. Just give it a full complement of intelligent Klingons and we're good to go. We can loot the extra weapons later
