ok so last nite i was thinking which is better having: 1 high level ship or 2 low level ships for the same price.
for instance: 1 intrepid + 1 akira = Di:981 Tri:304 Sup: 34 time:184| off:41 def:48 sys:20
                   1 sovereign = Di:935 Tri:283 Sup: 29 time:115| off:36 def:46 sys:18
(this excludes teching costs etc)

hence 1 intrepid + 1 akira ~= 1 sovereign

my view is you have 2 ships then thats 2 targets the the enemy much take out. further if one ship gets destroyed you only lose part of your resource investment.

but with 1 higher level ship its only one target and if it goes your whole investment goes too.

i think overall having low level ships in a game is better than having high level ships.

Ich think both options have advantages and disadvantages.

If you have an officer-ranked Sovereign, it has more staying-power than Intrepid and Akira.

If you need more firepower, one officer-ranked Akira and one Intrepid are the choice.

So it depends on what exactly you want to have.

well what i wana see from this poll is whether ppl will prefer the one high level ship or 2 low level ships.

because alot of ppl will say that you should always try go for the high level ships because they last longer and you get better bang for your buck over the long run. how ever i tend to disagree with that because i personally find having more low ships better than having less high level ships. hence i think high level ships arent really that worth it. (unless its something like a excelsior II with pwnage quantum torps)

so if more ppl vote for 2 low level ships instead of 1 high level ship then i reckon the devs need to improve the high level ships in some way to make them more worth while.

A Sovereign in a fleet of some small vessels is a powerful support but will also be the last ship targetted unless your opponent is obsessed with destroying it, which will be hard for many smaller vessels. Cruisers will do a good job on it though.

Usually it's the mass of smaller ships that outguns bigger ships which are available later and are more expensive. If they're not outnumbered, bigger ships will eventually win.

but the thing is why go for those high level ships if you can just build more low level ships.

And theres a problem, most of the time high level ships are out numbered coz its better to just build more low level ships.

1 intrepid and 1 akira will kill a sovereign and possibly without any losses to the akria and interpid. sure i bet the intrepid might be near death but you have caused your opponent a big loss by killing the Sovereign. yet you with the akira and intrepid and have lost nothing and if anything of yours dies its gona be the intrepid and thats less than half what a sovereign is worth.

this i why i believe we dont see that many high level ships like Sovereigns in MP much

your calcs are not correct, due the fact the sovreign needs alot more research and so costs a shitload more.

u didnt read my first post Brother Gabriel. i was taking things as is, minus research etc. a best case scenario for high level ships

ooops :sweatdrop:
but then ... the topic makes even less sense

In that example the Sovereign would take 50% reduced damage from the Intrepid and do 30% less to the Intrepid.

As has been said before me, it depends on the unit and many other variables. Each unit has a speciality, and some are more suited for mass production in some situations than others are. I'd rather have SuS'a's than Vor'chas when facing Eresis for instance.

We generally don't see high level ships in team games, because people feel they get more by not teching up. There is also of course a problem right now with overcounting of passives, which makes certain low level ships more powerful than intended.

I'm also of the opinion that it totally depends on what you want to do with the ship. If you want to raid, you'll need fast ships, if you want to kill destroyers, torpedo based units aren't the best option, if you want to kill battleships, you don't need pulses etc etc.
You can't really say what's better. I'm not sure about Borg though. :borg: I think a cube is alot better than Scubes(or Probes) of the same costs, spheres on the other hand do smaller damage than a respective Scube group, however, they last longer. Again it depends on what you need.

if u wanna harass, a scube is way better than a cube lol. a cube is better than other fleet ships though because of its raw power and psych effect. also a full tac cube can kill nearly anything before it can escape and repair. so never engage a cube unless u are sure u can kill it.

I didn't vote - my option isn't up there  :sweatdrop:

lol what would your option have been dom?

Well, I'd like to see the option: "It depends on the situation" or sth. like that. I didn't vote myself, because that option isn't there ;).
