Fleet Operations tries to keep close to the Star Trek shows, especially for graphics and visual effects. Yet, we always had a slight but important issue: a starship's name and registry. Both are very prominent markings on a ship and were seen in many show and movie flybys. What would the Enterprise have been without the famous "1701"? Yet, we had to skip the nameplates entirely.

oh wow, nice work
klinks would presumably have everything written in klingon script. so you guys would have to learn to write in klingon, or just make it all random klingon letters (which im ok with too).

So how would one put on the model where the registries and ship names go?

yes, to do that for other races is probably not worth the effort. we know nearly nothing about how and if ship names are written on other races' vessels and we especially don't want to put names on vessels which didn't even have one in the show. i doubt that we have someone here who can fluently read klingon

about 600 odfs per ship (for each rank and name), 200 sod files per ship, 200 full size texture files per ship. veeery easy to mod. but don't worry, the fleet operations installer still fits on a dual layer dvd
naj, just joking it works exactly like in st:legacy if you know that. very small separate texture files for each ship name and one new odf command to link the names to the textures. models have to be modified for it to work (again, just like in st:legacy - "stlogo")

what about adding a random (unique) symbol on klingon ships, call it a ship identifier or something, like a house emblem but for a ship. could have been developed between nemesis and fo time. the klingons may have admired the way starfleet displays their ship name/identifier with pride, and enjoyed having their's painted on the hull to remind enemy ships who is blowing them up, kinda like teabagging
romulans wouldnt have identifying marks painted on their ships as that would give info to the enemy. borg obviously wouldnt. and i doubt the dominion would care, their ships are like their clone army.

@Myles
I like the idea of Klingons adding symbols to their ships. The Borg know the identities of their ships because they're all linked together as a single mind, so displaying vessel ID isn't necessary.
@DOCa Cola
As I said, I don't know Star Trek: Legacy. The only think I know about it is the fact that it runs on the A2 engine (based on screenshots of the game) and the name. But I'll wait for it to be posted in the guide.

Yep, the idea of house symbols for Klingon vessels is one going through my head too, especially as the Fleet Operations storyline focuses more on the several Klingon subfactions. But that's soemthing we will think about for a later version. Nameplates are most prominent for Starfleet vessels.

TO DOM: add optec's last post to the campagin an apcorapha guide
Optec, my qusetions, is how do you link the ships specific name and the assoacited texture, and will loading a small unique texture for each ship slow down loading, and finaly, will there be a graphics option to turn it off

there won't be an option to turn it off. the resource impact is minimal. as i said, it is a single new odf command. for details wait for the release or look at how it works in st:legacy we won't tell you more than that before everything is tested thoroughly. there will be plenty of time to discuss the technical aspect of this feature later

interesting will defiantly have to look out for this one

Whoa...awesome. I had an idea to do the same with hero vessels, but in cases like that it's so much easier to just put the registry on the hull.
Only problem I see is editing the model ready, but it shouldn't be too hard to select the appropriate faces, duplicate them and apply the texture...
Great work guys

Definatly me happy here. I already have logos on the Klingons, but not avatar-specific unfortunatly.
Will the Sovereign have registries on the nacelles? That image doesn't.
Canon would disagree, considering the Romulan logo is displayed on the head of the D'deridex.
To anyone who knows the Legacy style, does that one support custom names like the STO apparently does?

i meant ship identifying not race identifying, i think anyone who sees a warbird knows its romulan
should have been clearer
